Elite Sports Physical Therapy Week 9 Shore Conference Wrestler of the Week: Middletown South’s Jack Willi
Every week this wrestling season, Shore Conference fans have had the chance to vote for the Elite Sports Physical Therapy Wrestler of the Week on our website and decide which local standout should earn the weekly honor.
The winner of the Week 9 (Feb.17 to Feb. 23) is Middletown South senior Jack Willi, who won the District 20 190-pound title in dramatic fashion.
A standout upperweight on a senior-laden Eagles team, Willi won his first district championship with a thrilling overtime victory over Perth Amboy's Nazareth Pina during the District 20 finals. Trailing by two points late in the third period, Willi tied the bout 7-7 by scoring a takedown with 3.9 seconds left in regulation. After sending the bout to sudden victory overtime, Willi secured the title-winning takedown to complete his rally for a 9-7 win.
Willi was one of seven individual champions for the Eagles, who won the District 20 team title for their eighth district championship overall and first since 1996. Middletown South also set a program record with 13 medalists.
Willi has received the No. 5 seed for the upcoming Region 5 Tournament and will square off against Holmdel's Luke DuPont in the quarterfinals.
Willi was the runaway winner in our final Wrestler of the Week poll of the season, securing a whopping 88 percent of all votes cast.
