This wrestling season, the Shore Sports Network has once again partnered with Elite Sports Physical Therapy to present our weekly Wrestler of the Week feature.

Each week, a poll will go up with nominees for the SSN Wrestler of the Week and this week's poll will run through Sunday at midnight. This week's winner will be announced on Monday.

Week 9 was comprised of the NJSIAA district tournaments and the NJSIAA Girls State Championship Tournament.

Week 9 (District Tournaments & Girls State Tournament) Wrestler of the Week nominees (listed in alphabetical order)

Matt Bryant, Sr., Manchester

Bryant won the District 25 175-pound title by scoring a takedown late in the third period to win a 6-5 decision over Southern's Collin French. Bryant was voted as a co-Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

 

Nick Burns, Sr., Raritan

Burns avenged one of his two losses this season by pinning Red Bank Catholic sophomore Davin Brewton in 5:58 to win the District 20 215-pound title. Burns also won by fall over Middletown South's Matt Cody in the semifinals and pinned his opponent in the quarterfinals.

 

Conor Delaney, Fr., Rumson-Fair Haven

Delaney was the lowest-seeded district champion in the state, winning the District 19 215-pound title as the No. 8 seed. He helped turned the bracket upside down when he won by 4-3 decision over Piscataway's Richard Boateng, the No. 1 seed, in the quarterfinals. He then beat the No. 5 seed in the semifinals and the No. 6 seed in the championship bout.

 

Nick Delorenzo, Jr., Toms River East

Delorenzo was voted as the co-Most Outstanding Wrestler at the District 25 Tournament where he won the 144-pound title with two first-period pins and a fall in 2:34 in the final.

 

Brody Elk, Jr., Brick Memorial

Elk entered the District 23 Tournament with a 1-3 season record and seeded 7th. A few hours later, he was standing atop the podium and holding the Most Outstanding Wrestler award. Elk stunned No. 2 seed Dean Canfield of Brick, 9-5, in the quarterfinals and then won 13-6 over Freehold Township's Liam Flanigan in the semifinals. He finished off his sensational run by pinning top-seeded Jonah Bowers of Point Beach to win the 144-pound title.

 

Brady Klinsky, So., Middletown North

Klinsky won the District 20 106-pound title by defeating Matawan's Ricky Gomez, 8-5. Gomez is a returning state qualifier who had only one loss on the season, which came at 120 pounds.

 

Lorenzo Portella, So., Red Bank Catholic

Portella defeated Middletown South's Dante Miranda, 6-2, to win the District 20 285-pound title. He also beat Keansburg's Keyshaun Coppinger-Ward, 7-1, in the semifinals.

 

Jasiah Queen, Jr., St. John Vianney

Queen won 3-2 in ultimate tiebreaker over Hunterdon Central's Tanner Peake to win the District 17 157-pound championship. Peake is a three-time state qualifier who finished sixth in the state last season.

 

Liam Rosa, Sr., Shore Regional

Rosa won the District 23 title in dramatic fashion when he hit a five-point move with under 15 seconds left in the third period to win 5-1 over Freehold Township's Aidan Harrington, who was the No. 1 seed.

 

Skyelar Smith, Sr., Jackson Memorial

Smith ended her career on top of the podium by winning the NJSIAA 138-pound state championship. She defeated two state champions along the way, first defeating Delran's two-time state champion Emma Matera in the semifinals and then taking down Central Regional's Jayla Hahn in the final. Smith built a 7-2 lead before Hahn had to injury default with 30 seconds left.

 

Phil Stolfa, Sr., Red Bank

Stolfa won the 132-pound title at the District 20 Tournament with a 10-4 victory over Raritan's Brian Kmak. In the process, he became the Bucs' all-time wins leader with 103 and became RBR's first district champion in nine years.

 

Tyler Venet, So., Christian Brothers Academy

Venet beat the top two seeds en route to winning the District 21 106-pound title and being voted as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. He won 5-3 over Point Boro's Joey DeAngelo in the semifinals and then pinned Jackson Liberty's Anthony Urso in the final.

 

Jack Willi, Sr., Middletown South

Will authored a tremendous comeback to win the District 20 190-pound title. Facing Perth Amboy's Nazareth Pina, who entered the bout undefeated, Willi tied the bout at seven by scoring a takedown with 3.9 seconds left in the third period. He then secured the winning takedown in sudden victory to win 9-7.
