Every week during the 2017 season, Shore Conference wrestling fans will have their chance to vote for the Shore Sports Network Wrestler of the Week on our website, with tens of thousands of votes cast so far this year.

The SSN Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 22 through Jan. 29 as voted by the fans is Long Branch junior 182-pounder Peter Wersinger, who went 3-0 to help Long Branch reach the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2014. The win that put Wersinger in the running for WotW and ultimately led him to the win was bumping up to 195 and securing a pin over Colts Neck senior Steve Barsky that enabled the Green Wave to rally and stun the Cougars, 31-28, in the SCT quarterfinals.

Barsky entered the bout with just one loss and as the No. 2 ranked 195-pounder in the Shore Conference. Long Branch was trailing in the match, 28-13, with three bouts to go and needed major bonus points to steal the win. Pins by Justin Navarro, Wersinger and Hunter Marhan in the final three bouts completed the stunning comeback.

Wersinger also won by 13-5 major decision over Howell's Chris DeMarco in the SCT semifinals. He is 23-4 on the season and ranked No. 6 in the Shore at 182 pounds by theshoreconference.com

Wersinger and the Green Wave are the No. 4 seed in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV tournament and will face Colts Neck in the first round.

Wersinger won a tight vote with 37.21 percent of the ballot to edge Raritan's George Burdick and Howell's Luke Ecklof.
