Class A Central

No. 8 Rumson-Fair Haven 9, No. 1 Red Bank Catholic 8 (10 Innings)

Senior Gavin D'Aponte hit a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning and sophomore catcher Luke Gallagher singled home the winning run later in the inning to give the Bulldogs a wild, extra-inning win over the Caseys -- their second walk-off win over RBC in as many seasons.

Red Bank Catholic broke a 6-6 deadlock in the top of the 10th with a big hit from its own sophomore catcher -- a two-run double by Aiden Funk after Alabama commit Sean Griggs and Notre Dame commit Dylan Passo drew back-to-back walks with one out to set up Funk.

After an infield single by sophomore Charlie Stumberger, Rumson brought in senior left-hander Jackson Gallagher to pitch with runners on first and third with one out and he struck out the next batter while allowing a stolen base by Stumberger, then induced an inning-ending flyout to keep the deficit at 8-6.

Sophomore third baseman Dylan Ylagan reached on an error to start the bottom of the 10th and after a flyout by senior Jack Riva, D'Aponte drilled the tying homer over the fence in rightfield.

Sophomore Jack Gyimesi followed with a single and classmate Alex Calabretta reached on another RBC error to place runners on the corners with one out. After RBC failed to cash in with the same setup in the top of the inning, Gallagher delivered the winning single to plate Gyimesi.

Rumson had to crawl out of an early 6-0 hole just to make it to extra innings. Gallagher and junior Parker Shenman each collected an RBI single in a three-run bottom-of-the-second that cut RBC's lead in half, 6-3. Rumson later tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, with senior Aaron Del Tin doubling home two runs and Gyimesi wearing a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game, 6-6.

Stumberger helped RBC jump out to a 6-0 lead with a two-run double a four-run Caseys first inning, followed by an RBI single in the second. Passo singled home the first RBC run after Griggs singled and stole second base.

Class B North

No. 6 Matawan 14, Neptune 2 (5 Innings)

Junior Bryan McCartin drove in a run in each of his first three at-bats and seniors Andrew Gendi and Brandon Falco each added a two-run extra-base hit as the Huskies broke open the game in the third inning and topped the Scarlet Fliers for an opening-day win.

McCartin opened the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first on a first-pitch hit-and-run, then did the same in the top of the third to break a 2-2 tie. Neptune had tied the game on an RBI double into the rightfield corner by sophomore Hunter Morgan in the bottom of the second, but Matawan cut down the go-ahead run at the plate with a relay.

Gendi -- who pitched three innings to earn the win -- smoked a two-run triple that one-hopped the fence in right-centerfield to make it 6-2 in the top of the third. Senior Jack Sassa made it 7-2 with an RBI single in the fifth and McCartin followed with a sacrifice fly to left to push the lead to 8-2.

Falco tacked on two more with a two-run homer over the leftfield fence to extend the Matawan lead to 10-2.

Junior Colin McGeehan delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the fifth to make it 13-2, bringing the 10-run rule into play.
