Jack Tiernan pitched his second no-hitter of the season, this time going seven innings and striking out 12 to carry the Purple Roses past the Spartans and into the SCT round of 16 Monday at No. 2 CBA.
Tiernan allowed line-drive outs to the outfield by both Ben Robinson and Connor Tonring in the top of the first inning and then settled in for a dominant outing. A shallow fly-out to center for the first out of the second inning was the last ball Tiernan allowed to reach the outfield until the final out -- a fly-out to centerfielder James Doster to complete the no-hitter.
Tiernan racked up nine of his 12 strikeouts over the final four innings and worked around five walks thanks to a successful pickoff attempt in the second inning and an inning-ending double-play in the third.
Tiernan also scored the game's first run, which came after he was hit by a pitch in the third inning, advanced twice on groundouts and scored on a two-out error.
Anthony Crudo stole home to make it 2-0 and after a wild pitch made it 3-0, Doster capped the scoring with an RBI single.

(16) Marlboro 2, (17) Monmouth 1 (11 Innings)
Sophomore Chris Joy lifted a sacrifice fly to score Paul Santos with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning and the Mustangs walked off with a marathon win over the Falcons to reach the SCT round of 16 Monday at top-seeded Southern.
Santos led off the bottom of the 11th with a line-drive single to left-centerfield and stole second base before Paul Santos sacrificed him to third base with one out. Monmouth opted to intentionally walk the bases loaded -- with the second of the consecutive free passes coming after courtesy runner Brian Cantalupo stole second base -- and Joy worked himself into a 3-1 count.
On the next offering, he squared up a fly ball to centerfield, where Will Theobald ranged to his left and made the catch. Theobald made a strong throw to the plate, but it was on the first-base side of the plate, allowing Paul Santos to dive in head-first with the winning run.
Sophomore Sujay Sesha picked up his fourth win of the season with two innings of relief after senior Danny Trentacosta worked 7 2/3 before running into the single-game pitch limit of 110. Sophomore Alex Georges recorded the final out of the eighth inning and worked a scoreless ninth before giving up a single to lead off the 10th and turning the ball over the Sesha.
Paul Santos nearly ended the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, only to watch Monmouth freshman rightfielder Eddie Segara make a diving catch on his line drive in the right-centerfield gap with none out and a runner on second. Nick Scaff was running on the pitch, which gave Segara a chance to pop up off the ground, fire to second base and double off the runner for double-play that erased the Marlboro threat.
Georges turned to his defense in the top of the ninth after the first two Monmouth batters of the inning reached, with catcher Mike Consolazio throwing behind the runner at second base for the first out on a pickoff. Marlboro go out of the inning when Gavin McCarthy squeezed a pop-up to second base and caught the runner on first straying two far, nabbing him for another inning-ending double-play.
Monmouth broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when Mike Milevoi led off with a double and scored on a groundout to shortstop by Alejandro Ocelotl. Marlboro pulled even in the bottom of the inning, with Scaff leading off with a single, stealing two bases and scoring on an error.

(14) Ranney 5, (19) Point Boro 0
James Hare and Zach Messina combined on a one-hit shutout and Ranney took advantage of 10 walks issued by Point Boro pitching to beat the Panthers and reach the SCT round of 16 Monday at No. 3 Middletown South.
Point Boro kept Ranney off the board in the top of the first inning when James Bradley played a single by Grayson Testino in leftfield and threw out Ryan Costello at the plate for the second out of the inning.
Ranney broke through in the third with bases-loaded walks by Curt Chropuvka and Nate Fuller, then added three in the bottom of the fifth. Freshmen Justin Kauffman and Robbie Wrobel each contributed a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.
Costello entered the game one home run shy of tying the Shore Conference single-season record and finished the game 0-for-2 with a walk and hit-by-pitch.
Saturday's opening-round game was played at Point Pleasant Boro High School due to unplayable field conditions at Ranney's home field. Ranney played the game as the home team.
