Wrestling – Point Beach Beats Rival Shore Regional Again to Take Third Straight CJ-1 Crown

Point Beach won nine of 14 bouts to defeat Shore Regional, 38-22, on Friday night and take home the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 1 championship for the third consecutive season.

Jimmy Sherlock (152) and Vincent Storino (182) each won by fall while Jared Hoeler (170) won by technical fall to help send the Garnet Gulls into the Group 1 semifinals for the third time in program history. Point Beach will face top-seeded Emerson-Park Ridge in the semifinals at 9 a.m. on Sunday at RWJBarnabas Healthy Arena on the campus of Toms River High School North. The winner will then take on the Paulsboro/Roselle Park winner in the Group 1 final at 2 p.m.

Similar to their path to victory in a 40-22 win over Shore that clinched the Class B Central division title, the Garnet Gulls dominated the upper half of the lineup with wins in all seven bouts from 152 pounds through heavyweight.

Jimmy Sherlock's fall at 152 gave Point Beach a 12-10 lead and wins by Jason Sherlock, Hoeler, Storino, Liam Buday, Santino Giampa and Tony Lipari in succession gave the Gulls a 35-10 lead and put the match away. Buday defeated Taylor Sousa, 3-2 in ultimate tiebreaker, at 195 pounds and Giampa and Lipari each followed with 3-2 victories over Mike Rosati and Balint Bognar, respectively, to clinch the match.

At 113 pounds, Will Jarvis edged Matt Klemser, 4-3, in a matchup of returning district medalists.

Shore, which was wrestling in its first sectional final since 2002, received a major decision from state qualifier Al Desantis at 126, a 2-0 victory by freshman Michael McGhee over district medalist Jesse Bowers at 138, a 5-4 win by Jarrett Weir over Jude Lovgren at 145 and a pin by Brad Smuro in the final bout at 120 pounds.
