WindMill Shore Conference Week 1 Boys Lacrosse Team of the Week: Barnegat
Every week this spring, WindMill Restaurants and Shore Sports Network will be teaming up to select a Lacrosse Team of the Week based on its performance over the past week.
The WindMill Team of the Week for Week 1 is Barnegat, which started the 2023 season with three wins in the opening week. Shore Sports Network stopped by practice on Tuesday to present the Bengals and first-year head coach Will Brasil with a Team of the Week certificate and a WindMill gift card.
Barnegat began its season on opening day with a 12-4 victory over Brick Memorial. Two days later, the Bengals earned a 9-6 win over Class B South rival Lacey, holding off the Lions after they had cut Barnegat's lead to one goal heading to the fourth quarter. The Bengals closed out their week with an 8-2 victory over Brick Township to improve to 3-0.
Barnegat has received balanced scoring thus far with senior attackman Seth Freiwald, senior midfielder Robert Sawicki, and sophomore midfielder Luke Tortorici leading the way. Freiwald has a team-high nine goals with two assists for 11 points and Sawicki has seven goals and three assists for 10 points. Tortorici has been the Bengals' top playmaker with 14 assists plus two goals for a team-leading 16 points. Sophomore Jakob Jason has seven goals and two assists and freshman Keegan Dunn has chipped in with two goals and five assists.
Defensively, senior goalie Lucas Holland has made 22 saves with a 65% save percentage, backstopping the defensive unit of Joe Harrer, Eddie Ziemba, and Christian Dugan.
The Bengals return to action Wednesday morning against Shore Conference juggernaut Manasquan and have another Class B South game vs. St. Rose on Saturday morning.
