Surf Taco Week 5 Girls Soccer Team of the Week: Toms River South
The Shore Conference Class A South girls soccer division race started off in 2022 with Toms River North as the heavy favorite, but turned into a four-way tug-of-war thanks to a field of teams that stepped up their game throughout the season.
In the end, Toms River South found themselves with a chance to claim the top spot in A South on the field in last week's showdown against Brick Memorial on the road.
With the winner taking home the division championship, it was Toms River South that came up with the big goal, giving the Indians a 1-0 win, a Class A South championship and the fifth Surf Taco Girls Soccer Team of the Week of the 2022 season.
Sophomore Keira Mulvihill delivered the lone goal of the championship-clinching victory, which came 10 minutes into the match and was one of a limited number of scoring chances that Toms River South had over the 80-minute battle.
On the other side of the field, senior goalkeeper Delaine Wilkenson came through with a sparkling performance, which featured 12 saves that denied Brick Memorial the equalizer and, ultimately, the division championship. Senior standout Abbey Olexa also keyed the victory with her solid play in the back.
On the heels of its Class A South championship, Toms River South drew the No. 8 seed in the Shore Conference Tournament and held off Ocean, 2-1, in the opening round on Monday. Its reward for the round-one win will be a grudge match with Brick Memorial in the round of 16, with the winner moving on to the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals, currently scheduled for Saturday.
