2023 Class B South Girls Volleyball Preview: Donovan Catholic Looks to Turn Into New Number One Across the Shore

Glenn Jansen brings back a Donovan Catholic squad that is losing one talent from last season’s 21-4 perennial team. The Griffins made it all the way to the Shore Conference Tournament finals and made a serious run in the Non Public State Tournament last fall. That being said, Pinelands returns a team who made it to the Shore Conference Tournament Quarterfinals and won the South Jersey Group III State Title against Mainland last season. Jackson Liberty is another team that went deep into the fall with a state finals appearance as well. Barnegat made a run into the state semifinals after a 14-7 season. Lots of talent roams from Manchester to Donovan Catholic. With one clear-cut favorite to begin the season, a lot can happen as the days transpire.

Quick Overview: Donovan Catholic comes in as one of the Shore Conference’s deepest teams on paper. With only Chloe Colaner graduating, the Griffins have a special roster assembled together for the fall. Shantel Starling returns as the Griffins leader in kills, as she’s been a special talent for this program since she joined. Senior Daniella Tischio is one of the Shore Conference’s top offensive threats, as she led the Griffins with an astonishing 441 assists last year, not to mention the 33 aces she provided. The Bowbliss sisters return with a vengeance, with Carly coming back as the team's leader in blocks. After losing to Southern Regional in the Shore Conference Finals and making a run in the Non-Public State tournament, Coach Jansen and the Griffins come back as not only the front runner for the B-South, but a perennial front runner within the entire shore.

Quick Overview: There’s been quite a roar brewing down in the Pine Barrens as Coach Bennett developed quite a story at Pinelands last season. Not to mention the 11-1 start the Wildcats got off to, Pinelands made a deep run into the Shore Conference Tournament. The heroics of Eva Pollak, Molly Quigley-Sanborn and so many others last season took this program to the next level, winning the South Jersey Group III sectional finals over Mainland. In order for a repeat of this success, it’s going to depend on juniors Jill Becker and Madison Houseworth to take over and continue the garnered success the Wildcats have seen. With Olivia Shertenlieb returning as one of Pinelands main assists threats as well, this stacked team has a plethora of assets in order to make an established run late into the season.

Quick Overview: Coach Dancisin did a really strong job of constructing the current roster for the Barnegat Bengals for the upcoming season. Senior Cassidi Van Horn returns as Barnegat’s leader in assists, while having over 100 digs last season as well. Seniors Ashley Berger and Taralynn Charland will both complement Van Horn perfectly, as both were forces on offense and defense last season. Brooke Degrazio had a breakout campaign as a freshman, as she looks to prosper in her sophomore season. Olivia Carll and Isabella Pavan are both juniors who paved the way last season in versatility top-down. At full strength and health, the Bengals of Barnegat are a scary team to think about come middle of the fall.

These three were such a major factor in the run to the Group II finals, as they all return looking stronger than ever. Head Coach Brian Chesley also has Grace Chiafullo, a sophomore on the horizon who played significant time all season long. Junior Sam Camponera returns to the Lions as another high prospect to keep an eye on all season long. While Donovan Catholic and Pinelands have fortified rosters for the season upcoming, so do the Lions of Jackson Liberty.

Manchester

2022 Season: 7-12 overall; 3-9 B South

Head Coach: Erica Eno

Key Returners: Devyn Quigley, Sr (131 Kills, 4 Blocks, 76 Digs, 2 Assists, 45 Service Points, 36 Aces)

Key Graduates: Maya Bachonski (90 Kills, 6 Blocks, 20 Digs, 127 Assists, 37 Service Points, 26 Aces); Sadie Felipe (65 Kills, 5 Blocks, 14 Digs, 121 Assists, 38 Service Points, 22 Aces); Alex Goertz (22 Kills, 1 Block, 7 Digs, 60 Service Points, 21 Aces); Ava Perrelli (4 Kills, 110 Digs, 4 Assists, 48 Service Points, 29 Aces); Kim Perrone (72 Kills, 1 Block, 80 Digs, 2 Assists, 52 Service Points, 17 Aces); Madison Sales (18 Kills, 9 Digs, 1 Assist, 9 Service Points, 2 Aces)

Quick Overview: There are a lot of question marks that surround the season ahead for Manchester. One thing that surrounds this program is their motto of DIGGING deep. One thing is for sure to come with Coach Eno’s group this season. While the Hawks will be losing a significant amount of players from last season, star senior and multi sport athlete Devyn Quigley returns to provide the spark needed for this program. Quigley led the team in kills last season and was all over the place both offensively and defensively. With a lot of young faces joining the program, a coach with the schemes on all sides and a healthy Devyn Quigley, a team of question marks can become a team of prosperity very quickly. ____________________________________________________________________________

Lacey

2022 Season: 5-14 overall; 3-9 B South

Head Coach: John Setaro

Key Returners: Shayla Haemmerle, So. (2 Kills, 146 Digs, 8 Assists, 48 Service Points, 20 Aces); Emily Hauptvogel, Sr. (163 Kills, 8 Blocks, 185 Digs, 11 Assists, 62 Service Points, 40 Aces); Maya Kostic, Sr. (8 Kills, 33 Digs, 46 Service Points, 18 Aces); Ava Lingelbach, So. (16 Kills, 9 Blocks, 11 Digs, 3 Assists, 4 Service Points, 1 Ace); Nicolina Saccomanno, Sr. (13 Kills,  25 Digs, 48 Service Points, 22 Aces);

Key Graduates: Reece Coon (36 Kills, 4 Blocks, 30 Digs, 1 Assist, 87 Service Points, 43 Aces); Lauren Czaplinski (21 Kills, 19 Digs, 3 Assists, 30 Service Points, 8 Aces); Madalyn Frisch (12 Kills, 16 Blocks, 12 Digs, 2 Assists, 25 Service Points, 10 Aces); Mackenzie Horahan (7 Kills, 1 Block, 31 Digs, 52 Assists, 6 Service Points, 1 Ace); Riley Mahan (38 Kills, 5 Blocks, 74 Digs, 181 Assists, 104 Service Points, 49 Aces); Arianna Petisco (2 Kills, 58 Digs, 5 Assists)

Quick Overview: There’s an intriguing compelling case to have Lacey start anywhere in the middle of the pack, but the Lions have to prove it within the first few games to set the tone of the season. While Coach Setaro is losing a handful of players from last season, he is returning the leader in kills in Emily Hauptvogel. Hauptvogel also led the way in digs last season as she returns as one of the Shore Conference’s perennial players to keep an eye on. There’s a great combination of seniors that have been in big-time situations before and sophomores who had a strong taste of varsity playing time last year. If all comes together, the B-South only gets deeper and deeper.

Lakewood

2022 Season: 6-18 overall; 0-12 B South

Key Graduates: Sofia Arguedas (54 Kills, 6 Blocks, 227 Digs, 15 Assists, 89 Service Points, 49 Aces); Karina Carvajal (17 Kills, 3 Blocks, 60 Digs, 1 Assist, 56 Service Points, 19 Aces); Yesica Morales (301 Digs, 1 Assist); Emily Pratt (1 Kill, 17 Digs, 3 Service Points, 1 Ace)

Quick Overview: Coach Currao and Lakewood bring back their leader in digs, who happens to be entering her junior year in Nathalie Arguedas. While losing Sofia will be tough for Lakewood, Nathalie is ready to take over with others like seniors Sarah Pratt and Wendy Vega. If Lakewood is able to control the offensive side of matches, they’ll be in strong shape for the season as the team is filled with players who can serve aces at an unmatchable rate. Maricarmen Hernandez and Annabelle Oquendo both come in as formidable faces that will help Coach Currao and Lakewood day in and out.
