Class A North

No. 5 Middletown South 6, No. 11 Manalapan 5

Brevin Bezick ripped a game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning and his pinch-runner, Rob Chiusano, scored the winning run from third on Joey Massagli's ground ball to shortstop as the Eagles plated three runs in their final turn at-bat to deny the Braves and complete a regular-season sweep of a series between Class A North title contenders.

Manalapan took the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, the first of which scored on an RBI double to deep leftfield by catcher Dave Ghibesi to put the Braves ahead, 4-3. That swing chased Middletown South starter Mason Christopher, who hit the single-game pitch limit during Ghibesi's at-bat. Chris Silva then shot the first pitch he saw from Eagles reliever Dan Daly into rightfield for an RBI single and a 5-3 Manalapan lead.

The Eagles caught a break to get the rally going in the bottom of the seventh when Jack Concordia hit a slow-roller up the third-base line that Manalapan third baseman Varun Gabbita let roll in hopes that it would kick foul. The ball kicked to the left near the base but the home plate umpire determined it touched the base, making it a fair ball and an infield single with one out.

Lou D'Alessio then came through with a single into rightfield that chased Concordia to third base, bringing up Bezick with runners on the corners. The open base at second freed up Middletown South to run a hit-and-run and with D'Alessio moving on the pitching, Bezick rifled a line drive over the second baseman's head and into the gap. Concordia trotted home and D'Alessio raced in from first with the tying run as Bezick pulled into second base with a game-tying double.

Rob Chiusano ran for Bezick and catcher Andrew Marquis followed with a single into centerfield but Middletown South coach Jeff Karpell held the runner at third base. Massagli fell behind in the count and on a 1-2 pitch, he hit a ground ball to a drawn-in Anthony Foti at shortstop. Foti fielded the ball cleanly and made an accurate throw to the plate, but Chiusano got a good break and got his right foot to the plate before Ghibesi could apply the tag.

Before the seventh inning, Gabbita delivered the two biggest hits of the game -- a two-out RBI single in the fourth to tie the game, 2-2, and another two-out RBI single to even the score at 3-3 in the sixth.

No. 7 Red Bank Catholic 4, Holmdel 2 (9 Innings)

Jake Frankel came through with a pinch-hit, go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning and the Caseys battled past the Hornets in extra innings after tying the game in the top of the seventh inning.

Max Dantoni saved the game for Red Bank Catholic in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI single to score Charlie Stumberger from second base. Stumberger singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Al Delia.

Stumberger got a sacrifice bunt down in the ninth to move Aiden Funk to second base after Funk walked to lead off the inning. RBC added a second run in the inning when Dantoni singled to move Frankel to second and an error on a ground ball hit by Luke Lonczak scored Frankel from second.

Holmdel took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, a rally that started when Christian Ferranti walked, Joe Barbarino was hit by a pitch and both moved up on a passed ball. Jack Vallillio drove in Ferranti with a ground out and Barbarino scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Brandon Hendrickson pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win, working around a Raum Desai single in the ninth to close out the victory.

Shore 5, Rumson-Fair Haven 4

Shore starting pitcher Joe Santi did not last long enough on the mound to earn the win but he delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Blue Devils completed a sweep of the Bulldogs for their sixth win in their last seven games.

Rumson tied the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by D.J. Ylagan and Shore responded in the bottom of the inning, starting with a one-out triple by Parker Fegen to set up the threat. Rumson right-hander Aaron Del Tin came back with a big strikeout for the second out of the inning and jumped ahead of Santi, 0-2, before Santi shot a 0-2 pitch back through the middle and into centerfield to score Fegan.

Andrew Barham closed out the game with a perfect seventh inning to pick up his second win of the season -- both in relief.

Shore responded to Rumson scoring rallies three times in the game, the first two of which came courtesy of Cole Stefanelli, who drove in a run in the first, second and fourth innings.

Stefanelli hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, followed by an RBI single by Barham. Stefaneill then gave Shore a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the second inning and put the Blue Devils ahead, 4-3, with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
