Big Frog of Monmouth Wrestler of the Week: Raritan’s Russell Benson

Every week this season, Shore Conference wrestling fans will have their chance to vote for the Big Frog of Monmouth Shore Conference Wrestler of the Week on our website.

The winner of the readers' vote for the Shore Conference Wrestler of the Week for the region tournaments is Raritan senior Russell Benson, who won the Region 5 Tournament to become Raritan’s second-ever two-time region champion.

Benson locked in a cradle and pinned returning region champion and former state medalist Hunter Graf of Hunterdon Central to stun the home crowd at the Hunterdon Central Field House and take home the 132-pound title.

Benson is 40-2 on the season and 138-19 for his career entering this weekend’s state tournament. He is second all-time in wins at Raritan. After finishing one win short of a state medal last season, Benson, the No. 9 seed, is looking to close out his career on the medal stand in Atlantic City.

Benson won the poll with 33.75 percent of the vote to win over CBA’s Richie Koehler and Southern’s Matt Barnett.
