Class A Central

Wall 7, No. 1 Red Bank Catholic 5

Senior Triur Brown drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth inning to give himself a chance to earn the win on the mound and sophomore Christian Suarez pitched three scoreless innings to close it out as the Crimson Knights beat the Caseys for the first time since 2018, snapping a six-game head-to-head losing streak.

Wall loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with one out and Brown beat out an infield single that plated sophomore Austin Harr with the go-ahead run to make it 6-5. Sophomore Will Hague then followed with an RBI single to score senior Jon Cofone and push the Wall lead to 7-5.

Suarez allowed just two baserunners in his three innings and the lone hit RBC notched against him was a single by junior Dylan Passo with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Suarez followed that up by coaxing a game-ending groundout by sophomore catcher Aiden Funk.

Wall scored three runs in the top of the fourth to go up, 5-1, highlighted by an RBI triple by senior Sean Killea, who then scored on a passed ball to make it 5-1. RBC answered with four in the bottom of the fourth to tie it, 5-5. Sophomore Charlie Stumberger and senior Matt Brunner each hit an RBI double in the fourth-inning rally by the Caseys.

Holmdel 12, No. 8 Rumson-Fair Haven 6

Winning pitcher Joe Barbarino and the bottom of the Holmdel order helped ignite two different five-run innings and the Hornets took advantage of 16 Rumson-Fair Haven walks to pull off a season-opening road win over the Bulldogs.

Junior Logan Cardinoza and sophomore Jack Vallillo hit back-to-back RBI singles to get Holmdel on the board in the second inning after Rumson jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The Hornets added three more runs in the inning on two bases-loaded walks that bookended a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Cardinoza drew the second of the two bases-loaded walks to give Holmdel a 6-5 lead.

After Rumson tied it back up, 6-6, Cardinoza started a fifth-inning rally with a walk and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Sophomore Harrison Eng reached on an error that allowed the eighth Holmdel run to score and Barbarino gave the Hornets some cushion with a two-run double that extended the lead to 10-6.

Rumson looked as though it would overwhelm Holmdel during a first-inning onslaught. Junior Parker Shenman and senior Aaron Del Tin hit back-to-back singles, followed by an RBI double by sophomore D.J. Ylagan. Senior Jack Riva then blasted a three-run homer to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead four batters into the bottom of the first inning.

Shenman answered Holmdel's five-run second with an RBI single in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 6-5. Rumson tied the game on a passed ball that allowed Riva to score in the bottom of the third, but that was the last run the Bulldogs would score.

Class A South

Game 1: No. 4 Southern 5, Central 2 (8 Innings)

Junior starting pitcher Tyler McLeod broke the tie with an RBI double in the top of the eigth inning for his second RBI of the game and senior Matt Desiderio added a two-run single for insurance as the Rams pulled out an extra-inning road win over the Golden Eagles to open their season.

McLeod opened up the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI double and Desiderio also drove a run in before extras with an RBI triple to push Southern's lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth. Desiderio attempted to stretch his hit into an inside-the-park home run but was cut down by Central's relay to the plate.

McLeod pitched five scoreless innings before turning the ball over to senior ace Brady Lesiak. Central got to Lesiak by loading the bases, setting up a game-tying RBI double by senior Gavin Arieno in the bottom of the sixth.

Lesiak bounced back by recording a strikeout and a popout to end the threat, then struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to push the game into extra innings. He hit a batter in the bottom of the eighth, but retired the final two batters to close out the victory.

No. 9 Brick Memorial 7, Toms River South 1

Sophomore Joe McGlynn hit a tie-breaking RBI single as part of a six-run sixth inning for the Mustangs, who came alive late to top the Indians in the season-opener for both teams.

Junior Luke Douglas broke the game open with a three-run double that capped the scoring in the sixth, which followed two more Brick Memorial runs -- one on an error and another on a bases-loaded walk by junior Jimi Popp -- to make it 4-1.

Toms River South junior Aiden Lynch took a one-hitter in the sixth inning and gave way to freshman Cristian Mascaro after walking junior Matt Cordi to lead off the sixth. Mascaro struck out the first batter he saw in his first varsity appearance before Cordi stole second and Toms River South intentionally walked senior Nicco Maribo to set up McGlynn's go-ahead hit.

Brick Memorial ace Nick Garbooshian was sharp through six innings, allowing just one run on a second-inning RBI single by sophomore Evan Schmidt.

Brick Memorial was the home team even though the game was played at Ken Frank Stadium in Toms River, with Toms River South hosting Brick Memorial Saturday as the home team in the game.
