WATCH: Indians & Mariners Continue Rivalry

The 48^th meeting on the football field between Toms River South and Toms River North takes place Friday night and is the Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week on the Shore Sports Network.  The 7pm contest will be streamed live on shoresportsnetwork.com with Matt Harmon, Kevin Williams and Ed Sarluca calling the action.  You can also watch the game on the Shore Sports Network Facebook page or by downloading the free Shore Sports Network mobile app.

As it’s been in recent years the game is part of the Great American Rivalry Series presented by the US Marine Corps.

For years the game was billed as the “Civil War” in Toms River and while that might not be the case any longer when the Indians and Mariners collide it’s special to the players, coaches, students and alumni of the districts two oldest high schools.  The rivalry began in 1972 and in the early years it was dominated by South which prior to the opening of North in 1969 was simply Toms River High School.  However since 2001 the Indians have only won twice (2013, 2017) and last year the Mariners rolled to a 42-0 victory.

North comes into this game with a 7-1 record and has already clinched the powerful American Division title.  They are also fighting for a #1 seed in the South Group 5 playoffs which will begin next weekend.  Despite a 2-4 record the Indians have played better in recent weeks and it would make their season to upset their crosstown rivals.
