Holmdel lacrosse player dies after collapsing during game at Rutgers
HOLMDEL — A Monmouth County high school continues to mourn the sudden death of a lacrosse player who died during a tournament on Sunday.
Superintendent Dr. Robert McGarry announced Dowd's death in an email to parents and students on Sunday night. Jack's father Sean Dowd is an English teacher at Holmdel High School.
The Asbury Park Press, Patch of Howell and TAP into Holmdel & Colts Neck, citing unnamed sources, identified Dowd as a 16-year-old who collapsed on the field at University Park on the Rutgers campus in Piscataway during a fall league game organized by Leading Edge Lacrosse.
A statement from Rutgers University spokesman Neal Buccino did not disclose what caused the student to collapse.
Rutgers Police and first responders took Dowd to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead. Buccino declined to identify the student.
A GoFundMe page created to assist Dowd's family raised $40,000 in its first nine hours and continues to collect donations.
The Holmdel High School Boys Lacrosse team posted their condolences on the loss of Dowd, who wore number 9.
