This week’s “Turning Point of the Game”:

Late in the second quarter, Holmdel found themselves in Red Bank Regional territory down 7-0. After struggling on the offensive end for most of the first half, the Hornets were putting together a solid drive. Holmdel was set to receive the ball to open the second half, so any points going into halftime would have been ideal. On a 2nd and 6, the Hornets lined up in a tight formation, and sophomore QB Jared Battaglia pitched the ball to senior RB Tom Ammirati. The team had yet to attempt a pass in the game, and the pitch to Ammirati seemed to indicate another run play. Instead, Ammirati took a few steps to his right and set his feet before lofting a pass down the sideline to wide-open junior receiver Dylan Day. The entire Bucs defense was fooled by Holmdel’s play call as Day was able to easily trot into the endzone to make the score 7-6. An ensuing two-point conversion (which came after a roughing the kicker penalty on the PAT) gave the Hornets an 8-7 lead heading into halftime. Holmdel would win the game 22-14 and advance to the semifinals of their bracket. For their efforts, Ammirati and Day will each receive a gift card from Turning Point breakfast, brunch, and lunch.

Be sure and look every week for “The Turning Point of the Game.
