The first night of the NJSIAA District 22 wrestling tournament went pretty much as planned, with all the higher seeds advancing to today's semifinals except at 138, where sixth-seeded Long Branch senior scored an upset over third-seeded Liam Gallagher from Christian Brothers Academy.
The finals for District 22 are already set after Saturday morning's action, while the other three districts featuring Shore Conference wrestlers, Districts 21, 23 and 24, are all in full swing. Bob Badders has all the updates and results throughout the day right here on the Districts homepage. The top-three finishers in each weight class from each district advance to next week's Region VI Tournament at Pine Belt Arena.
BASKETBALL
The girls Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals are today at Brookdale Community College, with St. Rose-Holmdel underway this morning to kick off the action. Matt Manley has you covered with all the updates and the scoreboard throughout the four-game slate.
The boys SCT quarterfinals are tomorrow at Brookdale, so it's an action-packed weekend of wrestling and basketball. You can find the boys schedule here. We will have plenty of coverage from both days of action as the tournaments whittles down to the final four in each bracket.
FOOTBALL
This year's All-Shore Gridiron Classic, which is entering its 37th year as New Jersey's oldest annual high school football all-star game, will be on July 16 at 7 p.m. on the turf at Bresett Stadium at Long Branch High School.
The head coach for Monmouth County will be Shore Regional's Mark Costantino, who led the Blue Devils to an 11-1 season and the Central Jersey Group I title. The head coach for Ocean County will be Jackson Memorial's Walt Krystopik, whose Jaguars finished ranked No. 1 in the Shore Sports Network Top 10 and won the Central Jersey Group IV crown.
The rosters will be announced in April at the annual Academic All-Shore event put on by the Shore Football Coaches Foundation. The rosters are selected by the coaches.
In other football news, Red Bank Catholic first-team All-Shore quarterback Eddie Hahn added an offer from Colgate on Friday.
BASEBALL
The commitments keep coming earlier and earlier in Shore Conference baseball. Barnegat shortstop Aaron McLaughlin, who is only entering his sophomore season this spring, verbally committed to Rutgers on Friday. McLaughlin started as a freshman for the Bengals, and he is part of a Barnegat team that also includes Hofstra recruit Seamus Brazill, a senior pitcher.
McLaughlin hit .310 with 13 hits, 8 runs scored, 4 doubles and only three strikeouts in 42 plate appearances as a freshman.
In September, Manasquan sophomore left-hander Tom Sheehan verbally committed to Notre Dame, so the Class of 2017 already has a pair of Division I commits.
More on Saturday:
- Former Colts Neck star Anthony DeSclafani has an inside track to crack the starting rotation for his new team, the Cincinnati Reds.
- Shore Regional grad John Farrell, who managed the Red Sox to a World Series in 2013, got a contract extension on Saturday morning.
- Rajaan Dixon of North 13th Street Tech went nuts for 53 points and 14 three-pointers in a win last night.
- Manute Bol's son, the terrifically-named Bol Bol, is a 6-10 freshman who plays his high school ball in Kansas.
- The place in the middle of nowhere in Tennessee where Mike Trout gets his bats.
- Pat Venditte is trying to make the Oakland A's as an ambidextrous pitcher.
- The sleazeball revenge porn guy is going to jail for years. Finally, some justice in this world.
On tap for today: As mentioned above, today is all about the four District wrestling tournaments and the girls basketball Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
I'll leave you with this awesome fight scene from "The Raid 2." If you are an action movie fan and haven't seen this, it's a must. Almost as good as Snowpiercer as far as the top action movies from 2014 in my book.
