MIDDLETOWN - Although the Manasquan girls basketball team never trailed in its Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinal game against Neptune Saturday at Brookdale College, the No. 7 seed Scarlet Fliers got the attention of the defending SCT champion.

Marina Mabrey scored 14 of her game-high 24 points in the third quarter and grabbed 15 rebounds to help the Warriors fight off a determined effort by the Scarlet Fliers in a 49-39 Warriors win. Manasquan heads back to the SCT semifinals for the third time in four years and will take on Class A Central rival St. John Vianney for the third time this season.

"Neptune likes to make the game wild and when you make the game wild against Manasquan, it usually gets even more wild," Mabrey said.

"Most teams, when they go on a run, will get the crowd involved and they might feed off of it. With Neptune, it's like 10 times more intense for some reason and it can take a little while to calm down and block out everything else that is going on."

Marajiah Bacon and Desiree Allen each scored 14 points for Neptune, which trailed Manasquan by three points as late as the early stages of the third quarter. Mabrey scored 10 points during a 14-4 run that pushed Manasquan's lead to 42-27 in the final seconds of the third.

Manasquan beat the Lancers in last year's semifinal, 65-63, on an overtime buzzer-beater by Courtney Hagaman and went on to win the SCT title for the first time in three decades.

Victoria Galvan added six points, eight rebounds and four blocks for Manasquan.
