Marlboro 16, Howell 1 (5 Innings)

Senior Mark Capell pitched a four-hitter, homered and drove in four runs in a three-hit day at the plate to lead a Mustangs (6-5, 4-4) onslaught against the Rebels (5-6, 1-5). Capell struck out seven, walked one and allowed one earned run while throwing 83 pitches. At the plate, the senior finished 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI, including a three-run homer that made it 8-1 in the top of the fourth.

Senior Nick Wright, junior Julian Buchman and senior Joe Lomangino each went 2-for-4 and senior Frank Talarico and sophomore Daniel Talarico each went 2-for-3. Lomangino and Frank Talarico each drove in two with Lomangino also scoring three times, Wright and Buchmann each doubled and drove in one and Daniel Talarico doubled twice and scored twice.

Junior Thomas Strauch doubled and scored on an RBI single by classmate Daniel Furlong for Howell's only run, which tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Senio Vin Impresa (70) pitches lasted 2 2/3 innings and took the loss for Howell.

 

No. 3 Manalapan 1, No. 4 Middletown North 0

Junior Tyler Kane outdueled senior Danny Frontera in a battle of two dominant right-handers on top of their respective games and the Braves beat the Lions by a 1-0 score for the second time in five days.

Kane struck out a career-high 16 in a three-hit shutout with no walks while Frontera punched out 12 while scattering six hits and a walk.

Manalapan finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Cristian Bernardini to score courtesy runner Ken Sclafani. Senior catcher Anthony Matteis drew a leadoff walk and Sclafani ran for him and promptly stole second base before moving to third on a passed ball.

Senior Joe Stanzione belted a solo home run and senior Matt Pontari hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the difference in an Eagles (9-3, 3-3) win over the Green Wave (1-10, 0-6).

Pontari finished 2-for-3 with a double, Stanzione was 1-for-2 and senior Will Doyle was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Senior Mike Keenan pitched into the fifth inning and allowed one run on four hits and no walks over four complete frames with five strikeouts in picking up the win. Senior Jack Shea pitched the next two innings and sophomore Ben Schild closed out the with with a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

Junior Thomas Brewer and senior Tyler Abbot each went 2-for-3 for Long Branch, senior Robert Baez was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and junior Adam Benetsky and senior Christian Rodriguez each doubled for the Green Wave. Senior Jason LaViola took went the distance on the mound in taking the loss.

 

No. 6 Freehold Twp. 5, CBA 2

Senior Matt Villapiano struck out nine over six strong innings and senior Chris Corchado was 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Patriots (8-2, 7-1) to a bounceback win over the Colts (4-6, 2-4) after dropping its first two games of the season - the first of which was a 14-inning defeat at CBA on Thursday.

Villapiano scattered eight hits and walked over his six innings, allowing one earned run and throwing 113 pitches while improving to 4-0 on the season.

Senior Griffin Murphy went 2-for-3, junior Jon Olik was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored and junior Ryan Keegan finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base for Freehold Township.

Senior Gavin Kus went 2-for-2 with an RBI for CBA, while junior Alexey Stout (double) and sophomore Harrison Campi (run scored) each went 2-for-4 in the loss.

Junior Ben Hutchins pitched a three-hit shutout and the Rockets (5-5, 4-2) quieted the red-hot Bulldogs (8-3, 4-3) in a must-win game for Raritan in its pursuit of a Shore Conference Tournament berth.

Hutchins threw 86 pitches, walked three, hit two batters and struck out two to navigate his way through Rumson's dangerous lineup.

Junior Rob Scarola went 2-for-3 and scored the game's lone run on a fielder's choice groundout by junior Alex Dekis. Senior Justin Kilyk also went 1-for-1 with a double.

Sophomore Jackson Hinchcliffe took the hard-luck loss for Rumson, giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out four and throwing 71 pitches in six innings.

No. 1 Jackson Memorial 5, Brick Memorial 2

Senior Zach Rogacki led off the bottom of the first with a home run and senior Ty Beck added a two-run shot - his fifth of the season - in the fourth to back winning pitcher Matt Potok and lead the Jaguars (9-2, 6-0) over the Mustangs (5-6, 2-4).

Rogacki and Beck combined to drive in all five Jackson Memorial runs, with Rogacki finishing 1-for-2 with two RBI and Beck going 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Potok allowed two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and no walks over five innings, with the senior right-hander firing 73 pitches to complete his outing.

Anthony Mehmet and Beck took care of the final two scoreless innings on the mound for Jackson Memorial, with Beck striking out two around a hit to nail down the save.

Losing pitching Brady Leach and senior Brandon Hulsart each went 1-for-3 with a double, with Hulsart also driving in a run. Senior Reese Hackett went 2-for-4 with an RBI and sophomore Joe Nolan was 2-for-3 in the loss.

Junior Nick Lovarco delivered a game-winning single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Crimson Knights (9-3, 6-1) fought off the Scarlet Fliers (4-5, 2-4) and Rider-bound ace Brian Young.

Junior Andrew Fischer led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Max Harrell. Lovarco then knocked a line drive into centerfield to chase home Fischer with the winning run.

Harrell also came through with the game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-3. Neptune scored three unearned runs against Wall starter Matt Johnson in the top of the fourth, with sophomore Jack Tinik smacking a two-run double with two out to give Neptune a 3-2 lead.

Johnson pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk while throwing 109 pitches.

Sophomore Gabe Cavazzoni gave Wall a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a two-out, two-run single. Cavazzoni, Lovarco and senior Christian Cosenza all finished 2-for-3.

Young took his first loss of the season, going 6 1/3 innings on a maximum 111 pitches before having to give the ball up to junior Ryan Cole.
