Class A North

No. 3 Manalapan 17, Long Branch 7 (5 Innings)

Senior Anthony Matteis led off a seven-run Manalapan second inning with a solo home run and capped it with an RBI single as the Braves (12-2, 7-1) answered a fast start and a pesky effort from the Green Wave (2-12, 0-8) to pull away with a win.

Senior Tyler Abbot picked up a pair of RBI singles for Long Branch, which jumped out to a 2-0 lead and rallied to cut Manalapan's lead to 8-7 in the top of the fourth inning.

Manalapan put the game away with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Brandon Caputo, Gino Gambale and Tom Giudice each notching a run-scoring single and Max Graime closing out the win with a two-run double.

Matteis, Caputo and Graime each had two hits and two RBI, while Gambale was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Chris Marzo was also 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for Manalapan.

Christian Zabotka, Anthony Mauro and Ethan Rodriguez each went 1-for-2, with Zabotka driving in two, Mauro scoring two and driving in one and Rodriguez doubling and driving in one.

Abbot and Xavier Camacho each finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for Long Branch, with Camacho adding a double. Jason LaViola was also 2-for-3 with a run scored in the loss.

 

Class A South

Brick 6, Brick Memorial 4

Senior Jesse Evensen pitched a complete game and juniors Nick Hoheb and Brian Yacovchuk each went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI as the Green Dragons (6-8, 3-5) topped the Mustangs (6-9, 3-6) to earn a regular-season split.

Evensen allowed three earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven and throwing 97 pitches in the complete-game win.

Senior Ryan Duffy and junior Matt Kunzman each doubled and drove in a run, senior John Wade picked up a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the fourth, senior Rob Blair was 1-for-2 with an RBI and senior Christian Kuhl was a perfect 3-for-3 to highlight the Brick offense.

Senior Grant Hackett was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI while losing pitcher Aiden Patella was 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Senior Cole Manfro also doubled and, along with senior Joe Gioia, was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Ryan Turner and sophomore Joe Nolan each went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Brick Memorial as well.

Central 12, Toms River East 1 (5 Innings)

Senior Evan Agrapides and junior Shane Sajewicz led off the bottom of the first with back-to-back home runs and junior Cam Leiter belted a game-ending three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Golden Eagles (11-5, 8-2) both started and ended a rout of the Raiders (4-7, 4-6) with a bang.

Leiter was 2-for-3 with three RBI, Sajewicz was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Agrapides finished 2-for-4. Senior Trevor Coltenback also went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI for Central and sophomore teammate Chase Pierce was 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Sophomore Anthony Musso pitched the first four innings to earn the win and also helped his cause with a double and two RBI at the plate.

Senior Mark Roma went 2-for-2 to lead Toms River East.

Class B Central

Point Beach 31, Mater Dei Prep 1 (5 Innings)

Sophomore James Larsen pitched a no-hitter with no walks, no hit batters and nine strikeouts on 48 pitches and the Garnet Gulls (6-5, 5-2) coasted to a win over the Seraphs (1-9, 1-5). Larsen threw 40 pitches for strikes the the lone baserunners for Mater Dei came on a pair of Point Beach errors.

Keyport 4, Henry Hudson 2

Junior D.J. Thomson hit a game-tying RBI single as part of a three-run fifth inning for Keyport and the Red Raiders (5-4, 4-2) outlasted the Admirals (2-10, 2-6) in a pitcher's duel.

Keyport starter Jack DiPaolo and Henry Hudson starter Trevor Hendrickson each struck out 12 with no walks over six innings, with Hendrickson registering a complete game. DiPaola allowed two unearned runs on two hits with 89 pitches thrown before turning the seventh inning over to fellow junior Anthony Longo. Longo struck out two in a perfect frame to notch the save.

DiPaolo was also 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Longo was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Jake Mitchell was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the win as well.

Sophomore Nick Biggoto was 1-for-3 with two RBI for Henry Hudson.

 

Class B South

Barnegat 7, No. 10 Manchester 6 (8 Innings)

Junior Ryan Kulpa hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the eighth inning and the Bengals completed a late-inning comeback to upend the Hawks for the second time in the last five days.

Barnegat entered the top of the seventh inning trailing, 6-4, and rallied to send the game to extra innings with a two-run rally. Senior Nick Danbrowney led off the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit in half.

Junior P.J. Craig singled with two out to keep Barnegat's hopes alive and junior Justin Bye came through with a game-tying RBI double with Barnegat down to its last out.

Two errors set up Kulpa for his go-ahead hit in the eighth, which also came with two out.

Before giving up the lead on a pair of big two-out hits, Manchester authored its own two-our rally in the sixth to take the lead. Junior Justin Renzi delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to tie the game at 4-4, then junior Logan Duffy drilled a go-ahead two-run home run to catapult the Hawks into the lead.

Bye also hit a two-run double in Barnegat's three-run first inning, with junior Jared Schworn opening the scoring with an RBI single before Bye made it 3-0.

Duffy and junior Mike Damato each answered with RBI doubles for Manchester in the bottom of the first. Barnegat added to its lead in the second on an RBI single by Danbrowney.

Donovan Catholic 3, Lacey 2

Junior Anthony Mursko singled home senior Sam Gates with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and the Griffins walked off with another dramatic win over the Lions. Mursko also hit a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the fifth for Donovan Catholic, which also beat Lacey, 3-2, last Thursday in 12 innings.
