Ocean County Tournament
Championship
At Central Regional
(1) Toms River East 8, (3) Jackson Memorial 5
Matt Ferrara hit a tie-breaking two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and Gavin Toth followed with a two-run home run before closing out the Jaguars from the mound in the following inning to give the Raiders their first Ocean County Tournament championship since 2007.
With runners on first and second base and the game tied, 4-4, Ferrara crushed a 2-0 pitch to the warning track in right-centerfield to chase home James Whalen and Ryan Koman. Two batters later, Toth ambushed the first pitch he saw and launched it over the leftfield fence to double the Toms River East lead, 8-4.
Toth took over on the mound with two runners on and none out in the top of the sixth with Toms River East leading, 4-3. He allowed the tying run to score on a sacrifice fly by Brady Wendell, but preserved the tie by retiring each of the three batters he faced in the inning.
Jackson Memorial made some noise in the top of the seventh inning after Toth nearly retired the side in order. Dane Jorgensen led off with a single and after Toth followed that up with a strikeout, he induced a ground ball to third baseman Joey DiMeo that the Raiders nearly turned into a double-play, with Joe Naffaa beating out the throw to first.
The Jaguars got another life with a walk by Collin McCarron a two-out error on Julian Caruso's ground ball, which loaded the bases for the heart of Jackson Memorial's order. Toth walked Jackson Osmond on four pitches to force in a run and bring the go-ahead run to the plate.
Wendell got a good piece of an offering from Toth, but Koman settled under it in centerfield and squeezed it for the final out.
Koman also contributed a two-run single that put Toms River East ahead, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth. That was a response to Jackson Memorial junior catcher Tyler Huzzy, who hit a bases-clearing doubled to flip a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead for the Jaguars in the top of the fourth.
Toms River East opened the scoring on a double-play flyout by DiMeo, with the runner on second getting doubled off as Ferrara scored from third. Raiders sophomore catcher Luke Brush followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

Sean Hart belted a home run and drove in four runs while Andrew Gendi pitched a complete game to improve to 5-0, leading the Huskies over the Bucs to clinch a division title share for the first time since 2011.
