Junior quarterback/defensive back/kicker Jake Czwakiel ran for a touchdown, intercepted a pass, and kicked a 37-yard field goal, and the Middletown South defense turned in a stout performance to lead the Eagles, ranked No. 5 in the Shore Sports Network Top 10, to an impressive 17-6 American Division road victory over No. 4 Donovan Catholic

The victory improved Middletown South's record to 6-1 and clinched the top seed in the Central Jersey Group 4 state playoff bracket.

Middletown South scored on the game's opening drive when junior running back Donovan Summey reached the end zone from five yards out. Donovan answered on the next possession on a 5-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Najee Calhoun, but the extra point was unsuccessful.

Middletown South remained in control from there, taking a 14-6 lead late in the first half on a 1-yard touchdown run by Czwakiel. A lead grew to 17-6 late in the third quarter when Czwakiel connected on the field goal.

Junior linebacker Colin Gallagher led Middletown South's defense with 10 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and a pass deflection. Will Christopher recorded four tackles and one sack, Owen Richter made seven tackles, and Czwakiel had the interception to go along with three tackles.
