Sectional Finals
South Jersey Group IV
1-Southern 11, 3-Lenape 10 (OT)
Junior attackman Dylan Jinks scored the game-winning goal 1:03 into overtime to give Southern a dramatic victory over the Indians and deliver the Rams their second straight sectional championship. Southern led 10-9 heading into the fourth quarter before Lenape's Anthony Brunetti (14-8) tied the score with 3:39 left in the fourth quarter.
After being held scoreless for the first time all season against Old Bridge in the semifinals, Jinks scored five times and assisted on four other goals to lead the Rams (20-2) into the Group IV final. They will play Westfield, which defeated Bridgewater-Raritan, 10-5, in the North Group IV final, on Wednesday at Somerville High School. Sophomore attackman Nick Simonelli scored twice and junior attackman Shawn McManus had a goal and two assists.
Junior goalie Brendan Lefanto made 12 saves, including a stop with two seconds left in regulation. Senior FOGO Billy Dowd went 14-of-23 on draws and scored directly off a face-off win with 51 seconds left in the third quarter to give Southern a 10-9 lead.
South Jersey Group I
10-A.L. Johnson 10, 1-Rumson-Fair Haven 9
Matt Pedicine and Joe Francisco scored goals in the final 39 seconds of regulation as the Crusaders (10-11) completed an incredible run to their first sectional title by stunning the defending champion Bulldogs (17-4) in the final minute. Rumson led 8-6 heading to the final quarter, but Francisco (six goals) and Pedicine (three goals) brought Johnson back in a four-goal fourth quarter. The Crusaders defeated 7th-seeded Holmdel, 2nd-seeded West Deptford, 3rd-seeded Middle Township and top-seeded Rumson to win the title after beginning the postseason with a 6-11 record.
Chris Sutphen led Rumson with three goals and one assist while Dominic Padula scored twice and Chris Hulber had two assists. Bryce Metzger finished with 10 saves.
A.L. Johnson will play defending champion Mountain Lakes in the Group I title game on Wednesday at Livingston High School.
