Girls Basketball – Quigley Scores 35 Points to set a New Shore Conference All-Time Scoring Record with 2,589 Points
Manchester Township - Over the years the Shore Conference and fans have seen many stars play their high school basketball. Some of the best players to ever play in New Jersey are on top of the all-time scoring list in the Shore Conference. After 12 years there is a new legend on top of the mountain, Manchester star Devyn Quigley.
Quigley needed 35 points entering today’s opening round South Jersey Group 2 sectional game against Overbrook and that is exactly what she scored to give her 2,589 career points, passing Kelly Hughes from Point Pleasant Boro by one point.
“My dad always thought I would be a 2,000 point scorer,” Quigley said. “It's not that I didn’t, but it is such an overwhelming number especially when the new rules came with 24 games in a season and then after that it's one tournament and state games.”
The possibility of Quigley, who will be attending NC State in the fall, climbing the all-time scoring list and passing Hughes started last season when she averaged just under 35 points a game and finished with 977 points on the season. After her junior season she was at 1,679 points, which is an impressive feat with her freshman year being limited due to covid.
With all the 40 plus point games she has had, 17 in her career, and her three 50 plus points this season, Quigley has always put the team first. She gets her teammates involved and makes her teammates better.
“Anyone who has not seen her and you are just checking box scores and seeing points you think what the basketball saying is ball hog,” Manchester coach Dave Beauchemin said. “Not the case she plays the game the right way. The sky's the limit for her when she graduates. There is so much more to her game that she can’t showcase for us because we can’t ask her too.”
Manchester is no stranger to having girls high on the all-time scoring lists. Earlier in the year Quigley set the all-time scoring record at Manchester with 2,010 points. In that game she scored a career-high 58 points, which is the single-game scoring record for Manchester, passing Rutgers star Destiny Adams in both. Leilani Correa, who is currently playing at Florida University, finished with 1,692 points during her high school career, 595 of those coming her senior year at Manchester.
“It feels pretty great to have my name with those girls (Adams and Leilani Correa),” Quigley said. “Leilana and I play the same position on the wing and she has always been one of my favorite players and watching her how she plays. She is so smooth it is like watching music and basketball. I have taken pieces from their games and tried to morph their games into one.”
Quigley, who needed 35 points to break the record, got off to a fast start by knocking down three out of her first four 3-point attempts and scored 20 1st quarter points. She hit five 3-pointers in the game to become the all-time leading 3-point shooter in Manchester’s history with 169.
She also got her teammates involved early, having six assists in the first half. Her teammates scored 30 points in the first half and converted on six 3-pointers. Freshman Madeline Nolan hit two 3-pointers and senior Ziona Short scored on two 3-pointers.
“She leads on the court and she inspires us to make us better as a whole,” said Nolan who finished with 12 points and 3 steals in the game. “She is a great player and she is a team player. She is gone next year and I am very grateful I am a freshman and it is a big thing to be a part of.”
“I am confident we can win our section,” Quigley said. “Especially with how much confidence everyone has grown. When we played Egg Harbor Township there was a shift in our team. Even against RBR we came short by three points, but if you saw our team there was a huge shift in demeanor, toughness and being ready.”
