Freehold Twp. 7, No. 3 Middletown South 6

Senior Lucas Dixon, sophomore Jon Boyan and junior Lex Nelsen singled home runs during a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the third and the Patriots held on to beat the Eagles after dropping the season-opener at Middletown South via 10-run rule.

Sophomore Christian Borromeo scored the first run of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk by senior Ryan Kopf, followed by RBI singles by Dixon, Boyan and Nelsen -- the last of which scored a second run on an error to make it 5-3. Freehold Township added two more runs in the inning on wild pitches.

Middletown South jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a two-run home run by senior Will Christopher in the top of the second and a solo shot by junior Louis D'Alessio in the third. Senior Luigi Massagli cut the Middletown South deficit to 7-5 with a pinch-hit two-run double, but junior Mike Avino came on to shut down the inning and close it out in the seventh to save freshman Jackson Redmond's first varsity win.

No. 7 Jackson Memorial 6, Toms River North 5 (8 Innings)

Senior Matt Koblos led off the top of the eighth inning with his fourth hit of the game and scored the winning run after a throwing error on sophomore Tyler Huzzy's sacrifice bunt as the Jaguars escaped with another win over the Mariners after coughing up a four-run lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Seniors Brenden Lavallee and Ty Kazanowsky were the first two starting pitchers of the season for Toms River North and both were the offensive co-stars in the seventh. Lavallee cut the Jackson Memorial lead in half with a two-run double to make the score 5-3 and Kazanowsky then delivered another two-run double with two out to tie the game.

Junior Nick Striano came on in relief with the go-ahead run on second base and needed just one pitch to finish off the seventh inning.

Lavallee also made a game-saving, diving catch in right field for the final out of the bottom of the seventh on a line drive hit by Jackson Memorial junior Julian Caruso with the winning run on second base.

Jackson Memorial also flashed clutch defense in the top of the eighth to put Striano in position to win the game. Freshman Ian St. Luce reached on a throwing error with one out in the inning and on the wide throw, Mariners senior A.J. Chesney attempted to score the go-ahead run. Jaguars junior first baseman Nick Izzo retrieved the ball and fired home to senior catcher Aidan O'Donnell for the out at the plate.

Senior Charlie Meglio -- who hit a mammoth three-run home run to put Jackson Memorial up, 4-0, in the bottom of the fifth -- then made a sparkling play at third base for the final out of the top of the eighth.
