No. 8 Wall 3, Monmouth 2

Senior shortstop Gabe Cavazzoni smashed a go-ahead, bases-clearing, three-run double with two out in the top of the seventh inning and the Crimson Knights pulled off an opening day stunner over the Falcons in the final out of their final at-bat.

After a leadoff walk by Wall senior starter Matt Johnson, junior T.J. Legere came on to record the save after giving up a sacrifice fly to sophomore Will Theobald that pulled Monmouth within 3-2.

Monmouth jumped on top on a first-inning, RBI double by senior catcher Joey Esposito and fifth-year senior starter Aiden Denton took a one-hit shutout into the seventh before Wall came through with the winning rally.

No. 4 Rumson-Fair Haven 3, No. 2 Red Bank Catholic 2

Seniors Cade LaGrassa and Brayden Dill delivered back-to-back run scoring hits with none out in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Bulldogs scored three runs in their final at-bat to shock the Caseys for an opening-day, walk-off win.

Both LaGrassa and Dill were making their first varsity start for Rumson, which entered the seventh inning after managing only one hit vs. Red Bank Catholic senior right-hander Alex Stanyek over six innings.

Senior shortstop Reece Moroney and junior third baseman Aaron Del Tin led off the seventh with back-to-back walks and senior Spencer Hobson -- who broke up Stanyek's perfect game with a one-out single to center in the bottom of the fifth -- was hit by a pitch from RBC junior Steve Svenson to load the bases with none out.

LaGrassa then jumped on the first pitch he saw and rifled it to the gap in right-centerfield, chasing home Moroney and Del Tin, with Hobson getting the stop sign from coach Owen Stewart at third base.

Svenson then jumped ahead, 1-2, against Dill, but the Rumson-born transfer from Connecticut stayed in on a breaking ball and shot it through the middle of a drawn-in infield to plate Hobson with the winning run and set off a celebration.

Monday marked the second straight home game Rumson has won in its final at-bat, with the Bulldogs beating Wall, 4-3, in the Central Jersey Group II championship game after being down to their final strike three times in the final inning. Moroney and Del Tin were in the middle of that rally as well and on Monday, Del Tin had another epic at-bat reminiscent of the one he had in the 2022 championship game.

With Stanyek cruising through four innings on 53 pitches, Del Tin led off the fifth with a 12-pitch at-bat that ended in a called third strike, but set the table for Hobson's hit in the next at-bat, as well as a 30-pitch inning for Stanyek that ultimately ensured he would be out after the sixth inning. Del Tin also had a 13-pitch walk in last year's sectional final to extend Rumson's championship-winning rally.

Stanyek also jumpstarted Red Bank Catholic's only run-scoring inning, lining a double to the left-field fence. Two pitches later, junior third baseman and Alabama commit Sean Griggs crushed a line drive that landed on the berm beyond the fence in right field for a 2-0 Caseys lead. The longball marks the second straight season in which Griggs has homered in RBC's opener.

Senior Luke Centanni blasted a tie-breaking solo home run with one out in the bottom of the sixth and the Lancers rallied back from a three-run deficit to top the Warriors.

Junior Joe Russo broke up Manasquan's combined shutout with an RBI single to center to cut Vianney's deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth and Lancers starting pitcher Andrew Zottar delivered a game-tying, two-out, two-run single to score seniors Mike Pape and Kevin DiPede with the tying runs.

Sophomore Mike McCormack notched the save with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the seventh and got an assist from his battery mate, with senior John Cornacchio throwing out a would-be base-stealer at second base for the second out of the inning.

Manasquan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back RBI hits by senior starting pitcher Cullen Condon and senior centerfielder Brett Patten, with Condon's coming on a double and Patten on a single. Senior Jack O'Shea tacked on another Manasquan run with an RBI double in the fifth to make it 3-0.

Senior James Larsen and junior Colin Reinhard delivered RBI singles in the late innings and the Garnet Gulls bounced back from an early two-run deficit to top the Bengals on the road on opening day.

Larsen broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the top of the sixth that scored junior catcher Nate Clayton after Clayton led off with his second double of the game. Reinhard later padded the lead with a run-scoring knock the following inning.

Clayton cut Barnegat's lead in half with an RBI double in the top of the fourth and scored on an error to tie the game. Freshmen Nick Bruno and Patrick Mackie gave Barnegat a 2-0 lead with RBI singles in the bottom of the second off Point Beach ace Kyle Kolans, who settled in to retire 15 of the last 16 batters he faced, with a walk to Mackie the only blemish over the last five innings.
