Shore Sports Network Player of the Week - Week 5

Brian Waltsak, Monmouth

Last week, Monmouth desperately needed someone to step up with 22-goal scorer Joel Burgos sidelined due to injury this week and Waltsak more than answered the call. The junior forced and scored a penalty kick in Monmouth’s 1-0 win over Wall last Wednesday to clinch Monmouth a spot in the Shore Conference Tournament, then scored two goals in a 2-1 win over Red Bank Catholic.

The win over Wall clinched the Falcons a Shore Conference Tournament berth and was also their second win over Wall this season. While Burgos has scored at a breakneck pace to lead Monmouth this season, Waltsak has posted 11 goals and seven assists during his team's turnaround season.

Waltsak joins Burgos as the second Monmouth player to win a Player of the Week vote this season, making Monmouth the only team with two winners this year. The junior won this week's Player of the Week recognition with 39.4 percent of the more than 52,000 votes cast, beating out division rival Luke Yates of Ocean (36.1 percent) by fewer than 2,000 votes. Brick Memorial senior Lou Nazzaro came in third with 10.4 percent of the vote.
