SSN Player of the Week

Tom Collazo, Matawan

Matawan went 1-2 last week, but Collazo did his part for the Huskies by going 7-for-12 with a double and five RBI. The damage came in two games, as Collazo went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a loss to St. John Vianney and 4-for-5 with a double, two runs and four RBI in a 13-3 win over Shore. On top of the productive season at the plate, Collazo has been a defensive rock for the Huskies at shortstop.

Collazo picked up 47 percent of the nearly 14,000 votes cast to win POTW honors and beat out Barnegat freshman Lukas Torres, who checked in with more than 32 percent of the vote. Toms River South senior Matt Shiffer was the other finalist to draw a double-digit percentage of the vote, coming in a better than 11 percent.

SSN Pitcher of the Week

Nick DeCarlo, Jackson Liberty

The Jackson Liberty sophomore had a breakout start against the Class B South champion Lacey Lions last week. Before Lacey clinched the division, DeCarlo and Jackson Liberty kept the proverbial champagne on ice, with the right-hander pitching a five-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 4-2 Liberty victory. In that game, DeCarlo was up against his pitch count and fell behind the final batter 3-0 before coming back to record the strikeout and finish the game on 114 pitches.

DeCarlo drew better than 50 percent of the more than 16,000 votes submitted to beat out B South rival Tyler Suydam of Barnegat, who earned just short of 30 percent. Central right-hander A.J. Smith, who beat Jackson Liberty and Jackson Memorial last week, picked up 11 percent of the vote.
