The Lacey baseball team has made headlines in 2017 with its standout pitching, but a young Lions slugger has flashed his potential over the last calendar year and it's been enough to catch the attention of some major college programs.

Monday, sophomore catcher Jorden Jurkiewicz chose one of those programs when he announced his non-binding verbal commitment to play at the University of Maryland, according to a post on Twitter.

Jurkiewicz held his own as a freshman in 2016 before producing a big summer that has bled into his sophomore year at the varsity level. To date in 2017, Jurkiewicz is hitting 13-for-33 (.394) with a double, triple and a home run, as well as a .526 on-base percentage.

He has also begun to serve more regularly as starting catcher after playing third base last season and at the start of this year. So far, he has thrown out two of three attempted base-stealers against him.

Maryland is currently home to another former Shore Conference standout in Red Bank Catholic alumnus Mike Resigno, who was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in June of 2016 and elected to return to College Park for his final year.
