Class A North

No. 3 Middletown South 4, Marlboro 1

The Eagles scratched across four runs in the first two innings and picked up their pitchers on defense throughout a Class A North win over the Mustangs -- a rematch of the 2021 Central Jersey Group IV final.

Both Middletown South runs against Marlboro junior Alex D'Ambrosio in the first inning were unearned, with the first scoring on a two-out error and another coming home on an RBI infield single by senior Evan Wood.

Sophomore Lou D'Alessio plated the third Eagles run with an RBI single in the second and junior starter Ben Schild followed with an RBI infield single later in the inning.

Schild escaped the top of the first inning when D'Alessio fielded a single by sophomore Paul Santos in centerfield, hit cutoff man and first baseman Joe Stanzione, who threw to senior catcher Ben Cacoilo to cut down the run at the plate for the final out.

Schild ran into more trouble in the fifth and departed with runners on first and second with one out. After Will Jagerburger walked the next man, Wood came in and escaped the bases-loaded, one-out jam by inducing a fly out and ground out to end the inning.

No. 10 Howell 11, Middletown North 0

Senior Thomas Strauch and sophomore Joe Zito each hit an RBI double off Seton Hall commit Colin Dowlen in the top of the first inning and that was all senior Dan Furlong needed to pitch the Rebels past the Lions.

Furlong pitched a seven-inning complete-game for the second consecutive start to open the season and both wins came against 2021 Shore Sports Network All-Shore pitchers -- Manalapan senior Tyler Kane (no-decision in six innings) on April 2 and Dowlen on Friday.

Class A South

Toms River South 3, Brick 0

Senior Aidan Folsom came through with a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless deadlock and the Indians pulled out a win over the Green Dragons behind a four-hit shutout from senior right-hander Jake Wilber.

Junior Mike Erli led off the sixth with a single and junior Ryan Schmidt was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with none out. After a sacrifice by junior A.J. Pierson moved each runner up one base, Folsom lined a shot to centerfield to plate both teammates and moved to second base on the throw.

Senior Brandon Elmendorf chipped in an RBI infield single to pile on an insurance run for Wilber, who outdueled Brick starter and hard-luck loser Matt Kunzman.

Barnegat 3, Point Boro 2 (8 Innings)

Senior Jared Schworn roped a game-winning, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth and the Bengals pulled out a walk-off win over the Panthers in extra innings.

Senior Nick Scelfo gave Point Boro a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth with a two-out RBI single. Barnegat came back with an instant response, with senior Rafael Dominguez leading off the bottom of the inning with a single.

Point Boro set Barnegat up even more with an error that allowed Dominguez to race to third and batter Ryan Kulpa to move up to second with none out. Schworn -- who pitched into the eighth inning and was on the hook for the loss -- then smoked a shot into centerfield to plate both runners and end the game.

Kulpa earned the win in relief of Schworn, his third win in three appearances this season.
