Round of 16

(1) Howell 8, (16) Middletown North 7 (8 Innings)

Junior Russell Halvorsen drilled a game-winning, walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh for his second homer of the game and the top-seeded Rebels dodged and upset-bid by the Lions and advance to the MCT quarterfinals Sunday vs. Wall.

Halvorsen led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run that put Howell on top, 3-1, and he singled to lead off the game before scoring on a two-run home run by senior Thomas Strauch.

Up until Halvorsen's solo home run, both teams were scoreless since the top of the fifth, when senior Colin Dowlen hit a two-run homer to pull Middletown North even at 7-7.

Middletown North and Howell traded four-run innings in the top and bottom of the fifth. Junior Ryan Frontera swatted a two-run home run to pull Middletown North even, 3-3, in the top of the inning and the Lions took the lead on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.

Howell responded with four in the bottom, with senior Jeremiah Wojenski doubled in a run to cut the Howell deficit to 5-4 and senior Devon Smith giving Howell the lead with a two-run single.

(12) St. John Vianney 6, (5) Ranney 5 (9 Innings)

Senior Matteo Pasculli smoked a tiebreaking solo home run to centerfield to lead off the top of the ninth inning and senior Dan Afflitto shut the door on the mound in the bottom of the inning to deliver the Lancers with an inspired, extra-inning win over the Panthers in a back-and-forth classic.

Pasculli opened the scoring with a two-run double in the top of the first and added his third of four RBI by drawing the second of back-to-back, bases-loaded walks by St. John Vianney in the top of the second. Senior catcher Kyle Pollack drew the first to make it 3-1.

Ranney cut into the 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the third when senior Charlie Chropuvka blasted a solo homer to make it 4-2 and the Panthers pushed another across with three straight singles by juniors A.J. Gracia, Jack Tallent and Diego Tavarez and an RBI walk by junior Glen Gantalupo.

Gracia tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left-centerfield.

St. John Vianney regained the lead on an RBI single by senior Danny Flynn through the left side of a drawn-in infield in the top of the seventh inning. Gracia got Ranney the run back by drawing a leadoff walk, stealing second base, stealing third and scoring on an overthrow to third.

After both teams came up empty against Tavarez and Afflitto in the eighth, Pasculli zeroed-in on the first pitch of the ninth and scalded a line drive that took off and over the fence just to the right of the tall fence in centerfield.

(10) Red Bank Catholic 4, (7) CBA 1 (9 Innings)

Senior Andrew Gonzalez delivered a tiebreaking RBI single with two out in the top of the ninth and senior Nico Gonzalez followed with a pinch-hit, two-run single to help the Caseys pull out an extra-inning win over the rival Colts to reach the MCT quarterfinals Sunday at Freehold Twp.

Red Bank Catholic's defense picked up junior starter Alex Stanyek and winning pitcher Steve Svenson with four double-plays in the final four innings, including a game-ending double-play started by Svenson after snaring a comebacker to the mound.

Svenson took over with a runner on first and none out in the bottom of the eighth and got out of trouble thanks to a double-play and a strikeout.

CBA starter Colin Reilly also leaned on double-plays to get out of both the seventh and eighth unscathed, with Colts senior second baseman Alexey Stout making an acrobatic stop on a hard shot by Caseys senior shortstop Matt Scrivanic and starting the 4-6-3, double play for the first two outs of the eighth. Reilly then induced a pop-up to shortstop Harrison Campi to end his day.

CBA jumped on top with an RBI single by junior Hunter Del Guercio in the bottom of the first inning -- the first hit of the season allowed by Stanyek. The Caseys junior right-hander went 9 2/3 innings before allowing his first hit and his 13 strikeouts Saturday were a career-best.

RBC pulled even in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to left-center by senior Jake Jacobson. After tying the game in the fifth, Jacobson also drew a walk and scored during the winning rally in the ninth.
