The football program at Toms River High School East has been shut down for two weeks due to COVID-19 concerns, axing the team's scrimmage scheduled for today and forcing the postponement of the Raiders' season-opening game.

News of the team's shutdown was first reported by the Asbury Park Press.

District spokesperson Michael Kenny said that all on-field activities for the football team are suspended through Oct. 1. Toms River East was set to open the season against Jackson Liberty on Friday, Oct. 2. That game will be rescheduled. Each team is allowed only one scrimmage under this year's COVID-19 guidelines and East's was supposed to be today against Lacey. That game has been canceled.
