NJSIAA Tournament

Public first round

South Group 4

(8) Manalapan 9, (9) Rancocas Valley 8 (OT)

Sophomore attackman Jake Schatz scored the game-winning goal with 1:35 left in overtime to cap a sensational game as the Braves rallied for a sensational victory over the Red Devils for the first state playoff win in program history.

Junior defenseman Aidan Wilmot forced a turnover with a body check, picked up the ground ball, and raced ahead in transition to start the scoring play. He dished it off to junior attackman Anthony Macchio on the wing, who then passed it across to junior attackman Christian Zdziarski, who then fed Schatz on the crease. Schatz powered through multiple Rancocas Valley defenders and bounced a shot into the net to kick off the winning celebration.

Junior midfielder Marc Stefanelli scored a game-high three goals and Macchio had a goal and three assists. Senior midfielder Luke Mann, sophomore midfielder Jason Rinaldi, and sophomore Matt Avici each scored once, and Manalapan also had a goal that resulted from an errant pass into the net by a Rancocas Valley defender. Freshman goalie Connor Doel made nine saves, including one in overtime.

Manalapan will play at No. 1 Eastern in the quarterfinals next week.
