Shore Conference Tournament

Semifinals

At Memorial Field, Neptune

(6) Howell 2, (7) Point Boro 1

Senior Riley Borenstein struck for an early goal and assisted a second one in the first half and the Rebels (12-2-1) hung on to beat the Panthers (12-2) and advance to the Shore Conference Tournament final for the first time in program history.

Borenstein struck in the fourth minute off a cross from junior Leila Oshira from the left corner. Borenstein managed to settle the ball right in front of the goal and finished the play with a point-blank poke past sophomore goalkeeper Ava Bjorndahl.

Sophomore Ashley Smith extended the Howell lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when a rebound off an initial shot by Borenstein fell to her feet and Smith tapped it in for the second Rebels goal.

Borenstein had a chance to extend the lead to 3-0, but missed a shot from inside the six while surrounded by a scrum near the goal.

Just minutes later, Point Boro cashed in on a corner kick by senior Madison Bjorndahl, whose initial service was returned back to her. Bjorndahl played it back into the box and freshman Elise Viggiano pounced on the loose ball and fired it into the goal for Point Boro’s first goal in the 65th minute.

(1) Freehold Twp. 3, (5) St. John Vianney 0

Junior Hailey Santiago scored in the 11th minute and the Patriots (14-1) tacked on two goals in the final five minutes to turn back the Lancers (9-5-1) and advance to the SCT championship game for the second straight year.

Santiago missed a quality look in the seventh minute and was sure not to let another opportunity slip away. Senior Gabby Koluch served a free kick into the box and after a St. John Vianney defender knocked it down, Santiago read the bounce, beat everyone to the ball and finished from inside the six-yard box for the game's first goal.

St. John Vianney held off heavy pressure from the Patriots for most of the first half, but a foul that knocked Santiago to the ground drew a yellow card set up a free kick in the 75th minute. Senior Kayla Wong placed her free kick to the back post and sophomore Gaby Parker elevated over the throng and headed it in for a 2-0 Patriots lead.

Junior Shea Jackson capped the scoring less than two minutes later by burying a shot from the left side of the field to the far side netting.

Freehold Township will take on No. 6 Howell in the SCT championship Saturday evening in Neptune -- a rematch of a 3-0 Freehold Township win at Howell in Class A North divisional play.
