Class A South
Brick Memorial 2, Brick Township 1
In a cross-town divisional matchup between the Dragons and Mustangs, Brick Memorial leaped out in front taking the first set in commanding fashion 25-8. The Dragons battled back to fight for the second set, winning 25-20. The final set between the two schools went to the 30th point, with the Mustangs moving to 2-0 on the season.
Isabella McKelvey had 18 assists and 4 digs for the Mustangs while Delaney Croman and Emily Fitzgerald combined for 13 kills.
Toms River East 2, No. 14 Toms River South 1
Another cross-town A-South Divisional matchup took place between Toms River East and South.
In the first set, East started out on top, taking the set 25-23. The heroics of Adrianna Cruz and Darlyn Neyra sent the Pirates on top first. In the second set, it was the skillmaking of Morgan Adams, Jordyn Lynch and Sofia D’Arcangelo that sent South to a 25-11 victory. In the final set, Ava Casales’ 16 assists proved to be one of the turning points and reasons East delivered a 25-16 victory. The Pirates get their first win on the season, with it being in the division.
Class B South
No. 2 Donovan Catholic 2, Jackson Liberty 0
The Griffins cruised to a two-set victory over division rival Jackson Liberty in the B-South division. Donovan Catholic opened up the first set with a 13-point victory, following it up with a 25-18 second set win.
Shantel Starling had 8 kills on the day while Caleigh Austin tallied 7 digs. Macayla Lindner racked up another 3 aces, looking to retain the number one spot in aces throughout the Shore. The Griffins move to 2-0 on the season and will take on Lacey on Tuesday.
No. 9 Barnegat 2, No. 5 Pinelands 0
It was a strong opening day start for Coach Dancisin and the Barnegat Bengals, taking down number five Pinelands in straight sets. The Bengals started off down 8-0 in the first set before coming together and defeating the Wildcats 25-23. Barnegat then hung on for the second set victory, pulling away 25-22.
Annabella Fraim had 20 assists and 7 service points for the Bengals in the victory, while Ashley Berger had 10 kills and Taralynn Charland had 11 digs. This marks the first career victory under the leadership of Coach Dancisin.
Manchester 2, Lakewood 1
Senior standout Devyn Quigley had ideas of getting the Hawks their first victory on the season as she provided 18 kills, 15 digs and 9 aces throughout the three-set victory.
Manchester started off behind as Lakewood took the 25-23 first set victory. Junior Kiara Davila may have become the second star on the Hawks, as she was all over the court with her 25 assists and led the Hawks to a second set 25-14 win. The contributions of Davila and Quigley proved to be too much for Lakewood, as Manchester took the deciding set 25-22. The Hawks will face off against Jackson Memorial on Tuesday.
Non-divisional
No. 11 Raritan 2, No. 16 Middletown South 1
The Rockets moved to 2-0 on the season after taking down Middletown South in three sets. Raritan started off hot, winning the first game 25-21. The Eagles battled to win the second set 25-16, but Raritan was too much to handle winning the final set 25-18. Alexis Amodeo had 15 assists while Julia DelMasto had 10 digs in the win for Raritan. Raritan will play at home against St. John Vianney on Monday in a huge B-North divisional matchup.
No. 15 Freehold Boro 2, St. Rose 0
The Colonials got the opening day jitters out of their system and came together for a two-set victory over the Purple Roses.
Freehold Boro was led by Juliana Manrique and Dari Tysdypova throughout the match. Manrique had 11 service points, 5 digs, 4 aces and 2 blocks in the Freehold Borough 25-23 and 25-16 win. Tysdypova had 8 assists in the victory, helping the Colonials move to 1-1 on the year.
Manasquan 2, Holmdel 1
Manasquan was able to battle through a tight three-set matchup against Holmdel, getting their first victory of the year. The Warriors opened up having to battle back, losing the first set 25-17. Manasquan was able to take the second set 25-14, while clawing for a 25-22 third set victory
Elle Vitanzo was in second gear for the Warriors today, having a game-high 12 assists for Manasquan. Brooke Loughlin and Elena Weinseimer combined for 18 digs in the win today.
No. 8 Red Bank Catholic 2, Middletown North 0
Red Bank Regional 2, Lacey 1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-20)
The Buccaneers got their first win of the season in an out-of-division matchup against Lacey in three sets. The Bucs started off by taking the first set 25-22 before Lacey jolted to a 25-20 second set win. Red Bank was able to shake off the dust by taking a 25-20 victory in the third set, ultimately winning the matchup. Lacey’s Emily Hauptvogel had a commanding day in the loss with 12 kills, 13 digs, 13 service points, and 2 aces.
