Toms River South Captures Softball OCT Behind Blaszka No-No
The last time a Toms River South team won the Ocean County Softball Tournament George H.W. Bush was President of the United States, the Yankees had just traded Dave Winfield to the Angels and gas was about $1.15 a gallon. That was May of 1990 and 32 years later the Indians ended a long dry spell by beating top-seeded Southern 1-0 on Wednesday night behind a no-hitter from Janelle Blaszka.
Third-seeded South had lost twice to their division rivals during the season but turned the tide behind Blaszka’s gem which included 9 strikeouts and no walks. Only a second inning error prevented what would have been a perfect game but the senior did get some solid defensive play behind her.
The Indians scored the games only run in the 5th on a Chloe Seluchins RBI double which scored Izzy LaPerry as Rams pitcher Elizabeth Gosse allowed just four hits and was the hard-luck loser.
Toms River South improves to 15-7 with the win and now Coach Tom Malek will focus his attention on the Shore Conference Tournament where they are the 10th seed and scheduled to host Monmouth Regional today.
Southern (14-5), who won the Class A South championship, is the #5 seed in the SCT and has a bye into Monday’s second round.
