Thrive Week 1 Boys Soccer Player of the Week

Dave Kroon, Central

One season ago, Dave Kroon was in this space as Boys Soccer Player of the Week winner, but it was a bittersweet award for the current Central Regional senior. After scoring the two goals vs. Toms River North that got him on the list of nominees, Kroon suffered a season-ending leg injury that halted his season and dumped cold water on a promising start for the Golden Eagles.

This year, Kroon is back, he is again the Player of the Week and this time, it is all positive for both him and his team.

Kroon has shown no signs of rust after missing most of his junior year and to make the story even better for Central, his team has yet to lose a game. After two more games this week, Central is off to a 5-0-1 start and Kroon impacted each of the Golden Eagle’s five victories.

Over the first 11 days of the season, Kroon posted three productive performances. He assisted two goals in the season-opening win over Jackson Memorial, delivered a goal and an assist in a Shore Conference Tournament group-play win over Manchester, and scored twice in a 2-1, overtime win over Toms River East.

Kroon continued his scorching start this week with two goals in a 4-1 win over Toms River South before Brick Memorial cooled off Kroon and Central by shutting out the Golden Eagles in a scoreless draw.

The Week 1 Player of the Week contest was a runaway, with Kroon collecting 60 percent of the vote. Rumson-Fair Haven junior Charlie Butters came in second this week with 14 percent.

As the first Thrive Player of the Week of the 2023 season, Kroon will receive a shirt and free training session courtesy of Thrive.
