It figures in what is the strangest high school football season ever we are getting something I’ve proposed for more than 25 years even if it’s a scaled down version.

Football might be the only sport in which there is no Shore Conference Tournament…you go from the regular season to the NJSIAA Tournament so the best team among the 43 at the shore is rarely decided on the field.

However we know that 2020 is very different so with a unique opportunity the Shore Conference has created four-team “pods” that will match somewhat equal teams against one another over the next two weekends.  It’s the replacement for the state tournament and one of the groupings just happens to be comprised of the consensus four best teams: Wall, Donovan Catholic, Red Bank Catholic and Mater Dei Prep.

Tonight in what fans and us in the media are treating as semifinal games top-ranked Wall will host Mater Dei and #2 Donovan Catholic entertains Red Bank Catholic.  If these teams can manage to avoid the COVID curse the winners will play next weekend for what again is unofficially the Shore Conference Championship.

Our Shore Sports Network has already decided to award a special trophy to the winner and crown them as our #1 team, a spot Wall has held all season long.

Of course it’s all unofficial and maybe to some it doesn’t mean anything.  However football is the only fall sport at the shore that did not have divisions so in essence nobody has or will win any titles so what’s wrong with treating this four-team “pod” a bit special.  Good luck to the Crimson Knights, Griffins, Caseys and Seraphs. One of you will be a champion.

The RBC-Donovan Catholic game is the Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week and will be broadcast live on the Shore Sports Network. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m.  You can also view the game on our Facebook page and our free app.
