Both teams played at least part of Monday's showdown without their top scorer and the defenses rose to the occasion in a scoreless draw.

Holmdel played without standout junior Stephan Kapranov, who missed the game due to illness, according to Hornets (3-0-1) coach Matt Isaacson.

Howell (1-1-1) played the final 12:20 of overtime without junior forward Nick Turturro, who was sent off with his second yellow card of the match, forcing Howell to play with 10 men the rest of the way.

Neither team mounted a significant threat in extra time, with the closest instance of a goal coming on a free kick off the crossbar by Holmdel senior David Weiner in the 62nd minute.

Junior Henry McLean headed in a corner kick from Carlos Ramos in the first half and the Purple Roses (3-1-1, 2-0-0) defense and senior goalkeeper Jack Harmon made it stand up in a St. Rose win over the Panthers (1-3, 1-1).
