NJSIAA Tournament

Sectional Quarterfinals

Central Jersey Group IV

(1) Princeton 3, (8) Jackson Memorial 0

Harvey Smith opened the scoring in the first half and Archie Smith assisted second-half goals by Pasquale Carusone and Felipe Matar Grandi to spark the Tigers to a win over the Jaguars.

Princeton will face No. 4 Monroe in the sectional semifinals on Wednesday.

(2) Howell 3, (10) Manalapan 1

Junior Nick Turturro scored two goals and the Rebels topped the rival Braves for the second time this season, with the latest win sending Howell to the sectional semifinals Wednesday against No. 14 Old Bridge.

Manalapan jumped on top in the 12th minute with a one-timed finish by Luca Marano off a low cross by Mike Pepe, who carried the ball to the end-line and delivered a spot-on, low cross to the near post for Marano on a well-timed run.

Exactly one minute later, Turturro equalized with a header off a short cross from classmate Kam Brown.

Howell seized the lead when Turturro buried a right-footed shot into the far left side netting 1:02 in the second half. The Rebels put the game away in the 75th with a goal from junior Quinn Mills, who headed in a ball played into the box by junior Max Rocco.

Central Jersey Group III

(3) Lawrence 2, (6) Middletown North 1 (OT)

Dymtro Naum scored the tying goal off a corner kick with 30 seconds left in regulation and teammate Jackson Caruso won it during the first overtime period as the Cardinals rallied to shock the Lions after trailing for most of the match.

Sophomore Paul Que finished off a through-ball from senior Tommy Valinotti to give Middletown North a 1-0 lead in the first half.

(2) Steinert 5, (7) Colts Neck 3

Anthony Durling converted a tying penalty kick in the 70th minute and Tyler Tafrow followed with the game-winner within a minute later as the Spartans outlasted the Cougars in a wild, back-and-forth game.

Freshman Sean Moore scored two of the three Colts Neck goals to finish his first high-school season with 21 goals -- shattering the program record for a freshman by eight goals.

Moore opened the scoring in the seventh minute, assisted an equalizer by Tim Foley in the 49th, and gave Colts Neck a 3-2 lead with another goal in the 57th off a pass from Foley. Junior Kyle Moore set up his brother's first goal with an assist.

Steinert will host No. 3 Lawrence in the sectional semifinals on Wednesday.

(1) Robbinsville 3, (9) Ocean 0

Alex and Adrian Ivanov each scored a goal and Bora Turker assisted two to help the Ravens roll to a win over the Spartans, extending their sectional-title defense to the semifinal round on Wednesday, when they will host No. 5 Hopewell Valley.

(5) Hopewell Valley 1, (4) Middletown South 1 - Hopewell advances on penalties, 5-4

Chris Plessing scored the tying goal in the 55th minute for Middletown South, but the Bulldogs connected on all five of their shootout attempts to escape the Eagles while advancing to the sectional semifinals Wednesday at top-seeded Robbinsville.

Central Jersey Group II

(1) Holmdel 2, (9) Wall 0

Senior David Weiner scored the tiebreaking goal on a penalty kick with 5:40 left and led a shutout effort by an undermanned defense as the Hornets fought past the Crimson Knights and into the sectional semifinal round Wednesday vs. No. 5 A.L. Johnson.

With two starting center backs out of the lineup - Tyler Gravier while serving the second game of a red-card suspension and Dom Poli with an injured ankle, according to coach Matt Isaacson -- Weiner moved from his usual center midfield spot to center fullback and helped slow the Wall attack led by senior forwards Jake Petillo and Bo Pepe.

In the 75th minute, Weiner and junior teammate Stephan Kapranov played a combination that freed up Weiner to make a run toward the end-line on the right side and play a cross into the box. After Kapranov headed the ball toward the left post, a Wall defender left his feet and came crashing down on top of Holmdel senior Frankie Brusco, which prompted the penalty call.

Weiner ripped a shot to the lower left of the goal to break the scoreless deadlock.

Jaime Martin scored on an open net with 0.3 seconds left to seal the victory for Holmdel.

(2) Governor Livingston 1, (7) Point Boro 1 - Gov. Livingston advances on penalties, 3-1

Garrett Gurzo headed in the game-tying goal in the final two minutes of regulation, but the Highlanders survived the challenge from the Panthers on penalty kicks.

Matt Decker launched a long throw that Owen Clearwaters flicked across the goal, where Gurzo gained position and finished the point-blank header.

Point Boro finished just one penalty attempt in the shootout, which was converted by Noah McGinn. Panthers goalkeeper Adam Baker stopped a shot during the shootout.

(6) Manasquan 4, (3) South River 1

Cristian Gonzalez and Tristen Davalos-Guillen each scored in the first half and the Warriors rolled past the Rams and into the sectional semifinals Wednesday at No. 2 Governor Livingston.

Gonzalez opened the scoring with a 30-yard free kick in the 27th minute, followed by a 20-yard shot by Davalos-Guillen in the 35th after he beat a pair off defenders.

Lukas Farkas blew the game open with a goal in the 57th after stealing the ball from a South River defender. Two minutes after South River jumped on the board in the 74th minute, Manasquan wrapped up the scoring on an own goal.

Central Jersey Group I

(3) Shore 1, (6) Florence 0

Cooper Attaway scored off a feed from Sean Newbert in the first half and Shore's defense and goalkeeper Kevin Barfield finished off a clean sheet that sent the Blue Devils past the Flashes in a rematch of last year's Central Group I championship game.

Shore moves on to the sectional quarterfinals on Wednesday, when the Blue Devils will host No. 7 Roselle Park.

(4) South Hunterdon 2, (12) Point Beach 1

Alex Romano scored two goals to erase a one-goal Point Beach lead and give the Eagles a come-from-behind win over the Garnet Gulls.

Brody Powers gave Point Beach a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, when he followed up a penalty-kick save with a finish.

South Jersey Group IV

(1) Washington Twp. 0, (8) Southern 0 - Washington advances on penalties, 5-3

Junior goalkeeper Ryan Schweigart saved 10 shots during the 100 minutes of play to earn the shutout, but could not deny the Minutemen during the penalty-kick shootout, as Washington Township eliminated the Rams.

(3) Toms River North 2, (6) Eastern 0

Christian Assante and Josh Brazier each scored a goal in the first half and the Mariners and goalkeeper Mike Vivolo finished off the shutout of the Vikings to advance to the sectional semifinal round of the NJSIAA Tournament for the fifth straight season.

Kosta Papanikolas assisted the first goal of the game by Assante and James Homyak set Brazier up for his goal.
