The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association announced on Wednesday changes to the weight classes for both boys and girls wrestling ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

The structure of 14 weight classes will remain in place for the boys but half of the weight classes will be different. The new weights will be 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, and 285. The weight classes from 144-215 are new. The old weight in that range were 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, and 220.

There is generally a logjam in the middle weights on most teams and the new weights listed in the proposal are designed to alleviate some of those issues.

In girls wrestling, one weight class will be added to bring the total to 12. The are 100, 107, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 165, 185, 235.

Also announced was that the girls wrestling state tournament will be held at Phillipsburg High School on Sunday, Feb. 20.
