THE LEAD
--No. 1 Howell ran its winning streak to 67 matches with a thrilling 30-28 win over South Plainfield in a matchup of teams ranked in the top 10 in New Jersey. The Rebels won eight of 14 bouts and received critical wins from Neiko Malone at 132, Paul Jakub at 152 and Jake Nase at 170. In the final bout, senior Joe Sardina held Zach DelVecchio, the No. 3-ranked 220-pounder in the country, to a 9-5 decision where a pin would have won the match for the South Plainfield.
Malone scored a takedown and back points with eight seconds left in sudden victory for a 7-2 win over Thomas Fierro at 126 pounds. At 152, Jacob picked up huge bonus points with a third-period pin of Marc Giordano. Nase, who weighs in the 170-pound range but usually wrestles at 195, weighed in at 170 and delivered a crucial 4-3 win over Divon Pender with a reversal in the final minute. That allowed Howell to bump up both Shane Reitsma and Christian Murphy to 182 and 195, respectively. Reitsma won by 15-5 major decision over Brendan Hedden to give Howell a 30-22 lead with two bouts left.
--Middletown North sophomore Nico Cerbo won by major decision in the final bout to give the Lions a 39-33 win over No. 7 Colts Neck to force a three-way tie atop Class B North with Ocean. Middletown North opened a 35-11 lead through eight bouts thanks to five pins and a technical fall.
