NJSIAA Tournament

Sectional Finals

Central Jersey Group IV

(7) Trenton 42, (1) Colts Neck 41

Senior Danny Gaines scored 16 points and had a look to tie the game in the final seconds, but his three-point attempt was off the mark and the Tornadoes (22-7) hung on to beat the Cougars (19-8) and win their first sectional title since 2014.

Gaines hit a corner three-pointer with 46 seconds left to cut Trenton's lead to 42-41 and the Cougars benefited from the Tornadoes missing three straight front ends of a 1-and-1. Trenton finished the game 4-for-15 from the foul line.

Senior Rob Hill added nine points for Colts Neck, while senior Ji'Ayir Brown led Trenton with 10 points.

Trenton will travel to Egg Harbor Wednesday for the Group IV semifinals and will take on last year's Group IV runner-up Shawnee.

Central Jersey Group II

(1) Rumson-Fair Haven 57, (3) Carteret 52

Senior Devin Cooper and junior Jackson McCarthy combined for 20 of Rumson's 22 second-half points and Cooper hit four consecutive free throws in the last 20 seconds to seal a Bulldogs (25-2) win over the Ramblers (23-7) - their second consecutive Central Jersey Group II title.

McCarthy scored nine of his team-high 13 points in the second half and Cooper scored all 11 of his in the second half. Junior Ian O'Connor scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half to help the Bulldogs take a 35-26 lead into the break.

McCarthy and Cooper both had quiet first halves, but the rest of the Rumson team filled the scoring void. In addition to O'Connor's 10 points, sophomore Phillip Wheeler scored seven, while seniors Teddy Sourlis and Jack Solano each hit two three-pointers for six points.

Rumson will take on South Jersey champion Haddonfield in the Group II semifinals on Wednesday at Perth Amboy High School.
