Class A North

Manalapan 37, Marlboro 31

Scott Scherer scored nine of his team-high 11 points in the second half and Zach Misischia added 10 to help the Braves hold off the Mustangs on opening night. Kyle Mullen scored all five of his points in the fourth quarter, including a lay-up as he was fouled to give Manalapan the lead for good with 3:11 to play.

Senior center Matt Ringel led Marlboro with 10 points before fouling out with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter.

Freehold 35, Middletown North 32

Josh Dixon scored a team-high 12 points and the Colonials outscored the Lions 18-2 in the third quarter to take control of the game and pull out an opening-night win. Junior Chris Hannigan also scored 10 points for Freehold, which trailed by 13 points heading into the third quarter.

Howell 62, Middletown South 48

Senior Gino Palummo scored 26 points while burying four 3-pointers and the Rebels opened up the season with a win over the Eagles. Matt Morton added 16 points and Zack Rovner chipped in eight in the win. Howell played without senior guard and leading scorer Aaron Trimble, who began a 30-day suspension from the team on Wednesday for violation of the school's code of conduct, according to Rebels coach Patrick Ramsay.

No. 1 CBA 85, Freehold Twp. 50

Junior Jack McGuire scored 32 points in his first ever varsity start and the Colts steamrolled the Patriots to open their season. Senior Jack Laffey poured in 22 points of his own and junior Pat Andree added 19 for the Colts, who broke the game open with a 36-11 run over the last 11 minutes of the first half. Andree also added four blocked shots in the win.

Senior Tyree Wilson led Freehold Township with 16 points, 11 of which came in the third quarter. Jason Czajkowski also scored 13 points and sophomore Steve Staklinski added 10 points off the bench. The Patriots played their opener without injured starters Kyle Czajkowski and Dan Saunders.

 

Class A Central

No. 3 Manasquan 50, Rumson-FH 46

Junior Jack Sheehan scored a team-high 15 points and junior Ryan Jensen added 11 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks to help lead the Warriors to a win over the Bulldogs to open the season. Senior Aidan McMenaman added 11 points in the win, while junior Brendan Barry led Rumson with a game-high 17 points.

No. 5 Shore 45, Raritan 41

Dan Largey scored a game-high 20 points and Kevin Bloodgood added 17 to combine for 37 of Shore's 45 points as the Blue Devils edged the Rockets. Senior Kevin Rodriguez led Raritan with 11 points while junior Joe Strand poured in 10.

Holmdel 44, Monmouth 22

Freshman Kyle Cardace scored a game-high 14 points and the Hornets rolled past the Falcons to open their season. Senior Luke Mayell added nine points for Holmdel.

 

Class A South

Brick 58, Jackson Memorial 55

Senior forward Brian Oehme posted 30 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals to lead the Green Dragons to an opening-night win over the Jaguars. Sophomore Noah Buono finished with nine points and knocked down a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:02 left to give Brick a two-point lead. Junior Kenny Buell also added eight points, six assists and four steals in the win.

Chris Hawryluk led Jackson Memorial with 18 points while Jimmt Markham added 13 and Andre Davis chipped in 11.

Brick Memorial 62, Toms River East 57

Senior Scott White erupted for 34 points and the Mustangs outlasted the Raiders to pull out an opening-night win. White scored 21 of his career-high total in the first half. Ryan West scored 20 points to lead Toms River East.

No. 10 Toms River North 60, Lacey 38

Junior Pat Marinaccio scored 14 points and the Mariners topped the Lions for an opening-night win in A South. Sophomore Mike Nyisztor added 13 points and senior Ted Thelemaque poured in 12 for Toms River North. Toms River North senior Jordan Craig led the defensive effort against Lacey center Chris Iapicco, who finished with 11 points.

 

Class B North

Colts Neck 56, Long Branch 43

Chris O'Reilly scored 15 points and Tom O'Reilly and Llyod Daniels added 14 each to help the Cougars beat the Green Wave on opening night.

No. 7 Red Bank Catholic 67, Ocean 48

Senior Kevin Fazio scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter and eight more in the fourth as the Caseys took care of the Spartans to earn the opening-night win on the road. Junior Evan Madigan chipped in 17 points and senior Liam Byrne scored all 13 of his points in the second half.

Junior Scott Bradley led Ocean with 11 points, while juniors Jake Talarico and Ru'Quan Dean each added nine.

No. 2 Matawan 64, No. 8 Neptune 63 (2 OT)

Senior Joe Piscopo scored a game-high 24 points and the Huskies rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to send the game into overtime and survived with a win over the Scarlet Fliers. The win was the 300th in the career of head coach Tom Stead, who previously coached at Holmdel prior to taking over at Matawan.

Jason Dunne scored 19 points for Matawan before fouling out in the first overtime, including a driving lay-up to give Matawan the lead in the final minute of the fourth.

Junior Mergim Gyjriqi added 11 points for the Huskies, while Kerry Kirkwood led Neptune with 13. Keishawn Kirkwood hit a game-tying 3-pointer with six seconds left in the first overtime to force another overtime period.

Red Bank 40, Wall 39

Senior Anthony Mitchell knocked down the tying and winning free throws with 7.9 seconds left and forced a turnover on the ensuing possession to help the Bucs escape with an opening-night home win over the Crimson Knights. Mitchell finished with a game-high 11 points, the only double-figure point total in the game.

Red Bank rallied from a 21-12 halftime deficit and recovered from a nine-minute scoreless drought to begin the game. Sadiq Palmer and Justin Gilson each scored eight points in the win, while Trent Mitchell led Wall with nine points.

 

Class B Central

Keyport 52, Henry Hudson 45

Junior Travis Alvarez scored 16 points and senior Anthony Fernandez added 14 to help the Red Raiders top the Admirals to open the season. Senior Kyle Rauen led Henry Hudson with a game-high 20 points.

Ranney at St. Rose, 5:15 p.m.

Asbury Park 57, Keansburg 43

Mikal Fearon scored 21 points to lead the Blue Bishops to an opening-night win over the Titans.

No. 6 Point Beach 69, Mater Dei Prep 30

Senior Jesse Hill scored 25 points in his Point Beach debut and the Garnet Gulls cruised to a win over the Seraphs to open the season. Freshman Danny Frauenheim and junior Mike Rice each added 13 points for Point Beach, which led 39-8 at halftime.

 

Class B South

Central 61, Point Boro 46

No. 4 Lakewood 63, Pinelands 61

Chapelle Cook led a balanced offense for Lakewood and the Piners edged the Wildcats to escape with an opening-night road win. Sophomore David Lunn scored a game-high 24 points and hit four threes to lead Pinelands.

Donovan Catholic 58, Jackson Liberty 41

Manchester 68, Barnegat 45

Junior Shavar Reynolds poured in 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Hawks to a win over the Bengals to open the season. Junior Nakim Stokes also added 15 points, eight assists and four steals in the win.

Junior DaShawn Anderson led Barnegat with 18 points and senior Xavier Young added 11 in defeat. The Bengals trailed by just five at halftime and nine heading into the fourth before Manchester pulled away.
