Class A North

No. 3 Freehold Twp. 51, Marlboro 48

Senior Steve Staklinski scored 21 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals and the Patriots (11-0, 6-0) held off the Mustangs (7-3, 5-1) to extend their season-opening win streak to 11 - the best start for the program since the 2006-07 Shore Conference Tournament championship team started 18-0.

Marlboro cut a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to one on two occasions and had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but senior P.J. Ringel's scoop shot in the lane rimmed out and Freehold Township took over possession on a jump ball. Staklinski missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 6.5 seconds left, but senior Bobby Weise tracked down the offensive rebound and hit the front end of his 1-and-1.

Sophomore Dylan Kaufman's three-quarter-court heave as time expired came up short.

Senior Ryan Zyskowski added 11 points for Freehold Township and senior Brian White and junior Ja'zeem Foster combined for eight points off the bench to pick up the Patriots in the absence of sophomore starter Greg Billups, who left the game with an ankle injury early in the third quarter.

Ringel scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter and added six assists, while senior Daniel Weiss also scored 11 points. Kaufman and senior Ryan LaRocca each scored 10 points, with Kaufman pulling in 10 rebounds and blocking six shots as well.

 

Class A Central

Matawan 53, Holmdel 48

Senior Patrick Hennessy scored 14 points and the Huskies (5-6, 3-3) topped the Hornets (3-5, 3-2). Junior Reggie Tawiah added 13 points and junior Michael Dunne pitched in nine in the win.

Senior Nick Harris scored a game-high 19 points behind 13-for-16 free-throw shooting to lead Holmdel. Senior Mike Simurro added 15 points and junior Jeff Zhou threw in nine in the loss.

Red Bank 43, Raritan 29

Senior Nasir Williams scored 14 points and junior Devin Cooper added 10 to lead the Bucs (5-5, 3-2) to a win over the Rockets (4-6, 1-4).

No. 7 Rumson-Fair Haven 53, Shore 41

Junior Teddy Sourlis knocked down five three-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points as the Bulldogs (9-0, 5-0) snapped a four-game winning streak for the Blue Devils (4-5, 2-3) by winning their ninth straight to open the season.

Senior Tommy Oakes added 11 points for Rumson while senior Tyler Pierson and junior Jack Solano each contributed nine.

 

Class B North

Red Bank Catholic 59, Middletown South 57

Junior Matt Ansell drove for the winning layup with seven seconds left and the Caseys (7-3, 5-1) pulled out a win over the Eagles (3-8, 2-4). Ansell finished with 10 points, while senior Terence Calandrillo led RBC with 18 points. Senior Mike Conley also poured in 14 points for the Caseys.

Junior Ryan Purcell scored 13 points to lead three Middletown South players in double-figures. Junior Dave Gervase added 11 points and junior Nick Unrath netted 10 in the loss.

No. 6 Manasquan 72, Manasquan 63

Senior Devin Jensens scored 22 points to go with six rebounds and four assists as the Warriors (8-3, 5-1) rallied from a 15-point first-quarter deficit to beat the Lions (5-6, 3-3). Junior Ryan Flanagan added 18 points and six assists while sophomore Brad McCabe contributed 15 points and seven rebounds for Manasquan.

Sophomore Rob Higgins scored 21 points to lead Middletown North, which stormed out to a 27-12 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to seven three-pointers over the first eight minutes. Junior Dave Campbell also scored 12 points and senior Marc Cerbo poured in 11 in defeat.

Ocean 49, Monmouth 41

Junior Andrew Seager scored a game-high 18 points and hauled in 11 rebounds to lead the Spartans (8-3, 3-3) past the Falcons (2-8, 0-6). Senior Darius Brown added 15 points for Ocean.

Senior Tyler Hawkins led Monmouth with 10 points.

Long Branch 57, Wall 50

Senior Cascius Briggs scored a team-high 15 points to lead a balanced Long Branch scoring effort and the Green Wave (5-4, 4-2) downed the Crimson Knights (4-5, 2-4) on the road.

Junior Tyree Morris added 14 points for Long Branch and sophomore Marc Dennis pumped in 13 in the win.

Junior Steve Geis led Wall with a game-high 23 points.

 

Class B South

Lacey 34, Pinelands 33

Senior Geoff Fairclough scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to carry the shorthanded Lions (2-7, 2-4) to a win over the Wildcats (1-12, 0-6). Lacey played without leading scorer Kevin O'Rourke, who missed the game due to a wrist injury.
