Senior right-hander Shane McCarthy threw a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and senior Chase Caruso went 2-for-2 with two RBI and four stolen bases to lead the Bulldogs past the Scotties and into the CJ II semifinals against the winner of Friday's game between No. 8 Monmouth and No. 1 Cinnaminson.

Senior third baseman Thomas Culligan also went 1-for-2 with a double for Rumson, which stole eight bases in eight attempts as a team.

Noah Yates went 2-for-4 with an RBI that cut Middlesex's lead to 3-1, but the defending Group I champion Blue Jays were too much for the Garnet Gulls. Ryan Franzoni also went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the loss.

 

South Jersey Group III

South Jersey Group II

(1) Barnegat 2, (9) Sterling 0

Sophomore left-hander Jason Groome threw a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and two walks and the Bengals edged the Silver Knights to advance to their first ever sectional semifinal.

Barnegat jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when left fielder Ryan Ulrich led off the game with a single, went to third on a base hit by catcher Nik Fraim and scored on a fielder's choice ground out by first baseman Ed Rogan.

Conner Hoeler walked to start the sixth inning and after singles by Joe Letinski and Matt Wolfgang advanced him to third, the senior second baseman stole home on a straight steal to increase the Bengals' cushion to 2-0.

Barnegat threatened in both the second and third innings, but Sterling starter Andrew Miller worked out of jams in each inning. Miller allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out seven in defeat.

 

First Round
South Jersey, Non-Public A

(3) St. Augustine 5, (14) Monsignor Donovan 0

University of North Carolina recruit Joe Gatto threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks in front of nearly a dozen Major League scouts and also went 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead the Hermits past the Griffins.

(11) Immaculata 4, (6) Red Bank Catholic 1

Brendan Madigan went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, but the Caseys could not overcome a three-run first inning by the Spartans in a South Jersey, Non-Public A first-round loss. Catcher Mike Alescio also went 2-for-3 with a double for Red Bank Catholic.

(8) St. John Vianney 13, (9) Notre Dame 3 (5 Innings)

Joe Rotelli recorded his 100th career hit with a single in the fourth inning and finished 2-for-4 with a two-run double and two runs scored as the Lancers pounded the Irish to advance to a sectional quarterfinal game against top-seeded Bishop Eustace.

Designated hitter Anthony LaVigne went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI, while right fielder Evan Pietronico was also 3-for-3 with a double and four runs scored to key an 11-hit attack. Third baseman Pat Devenney also went 1-for-2 with a two-run single and also made a diving play to his backhand to save two runs in the first inning.

Second baseman Drew Fisher drove in three runs with a squeeze bunt in the fourth and a two-run single in the fifth, which ended the game when LaVigne scored from first on the play on a throwing error.

Senior Chris Morris struck out six with just one walk in four innings to pick up the win. Left-hander Justin Chin pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
