Clearly Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato has made the fight against heroin and other drugs his top mission.

Thursday night he is teaming up with Anthony Pierro, Supervising Assistant Prosecutor for the Juvenile Justice Division to present a sports forum for student athletes. “Playing it Clean” will bring together some well known local sports figures to the Pine Belt Arena from 6-8pm, among them Todd Frazier of the Cincinnati Reds, MMA Fighter Frankie Edgar and former NFL running back Keith Elias.

Also participating in the free event will be former soccer standout Tony Meola, ex-Rutgers and Jets player Ray Lucas and Erin Cowley, a former US Olympic Basketball player. Parents are invited and urged to attend along with their children.

It may not be perfect but the first college football playoff gave us a result we could not have had under the old system. Ohio State, who just snuck in as the 4th seed won the inaugural event with a 42-20 rout of Oregon last night in Arlington, Texas. That came 12 days after they had knocked off top-seed Alabama in the semifinal. By the way had this been a year ago it would have been Alabama playing Oregon for the National Title.

With just about all their top players back Ohio State will clearly be among the top contenders next season and Rutgers fans will get a first-hand look at the Buckeyes as they visit High Point Solutions Stadium on October 24th. I have never been an Urban Meyer fan but there is little doubt he is one of the great college football coaches of all time and at age 50 has plenty of time to add to his resume.

It’s time we start paying a bit more attention to the Monmouth University men’s basketball team, who evened their overall record at 8-8 following a one point win at Rider last night. Their first victory over the Broncs since 2006. Monmouth is a surprising 5-1 in the MAC and will be home tomorrow night to face another New Jersey rival in Saint Peter’s. All the Hawks games can be heard on the Shore Sports Network’s 1160 and 1310AM and at shoresportsnetwork.com.

Last but not least: a very happy birthday to my wife Jane who turns_________today. Come on you didn’t think I was going to mention her age did you?
