Caldwell Tournament

Rumson-Fair Haven senior Marcus Iwama, a returning Region VI champion, won the 145-pound bracket while sophomore Theo Addison was second at 160 and junior Jake Shea placed third at 195.

 

Edison Classic

Red Bank junior Jack McMahon defeated Verona's John Loabrielle, 6-2, to win the 132-pound title. Junior Tom Hinz was second at 145 pounds to Edison's Billy Povalac, a returning state medalist who was selected as OW. Senior Kenny Geiger was also second at 220 pounds. Red Bank finished seventh in the eight-team field.

 

Ewing Tournament

Keyport's Alex Erven, Teddy Smith and Brian Ramsaier, along with Holmdel's Pat Ammirati, secured individual titles in the nine-team tournament at Ewing High School. Erven defeated Liam Burke 3-0 to win the 106-pound title while Smith pinned Pennsville's Mitch Smith in 1:41 to take the 113-pound title. Ramsaier edged Ewing's Abdel Emara, 8-6, in the 220-pound final. The Red Raiders finished sixth in the team standings.

Ammirati blanked Rancocas Valley's Eric Cole 6-0 to win the 120-pound title. Chris Ammirati (145) and Garrett Hilsheimer (182) finished second and Abhay Sampat (113), Troy Gallo (126), Scott Dupont (132) finished third to help the Hornets place fourth as a team.

 

Garden State Classic

Ocean junior T.J. Saldutti pinned Cherry Hill West's Mark Mazzarro in 3:33 to win the 152-pound title. Spartans senior Zach Hertling was leading Piscataway's Eti-ini Udott 6-4 in the third period when he had to injury default, finishing second. No word on the extent of the two-time state medalists injury. Hertling missed the second half of last season with a knee injury. Juniors Dave Tieto (113) and Brian Olesen (Hwt) finished third and the Spartans placed eighth out of 10 teams.

Freehold Colin Monahan took second at 113 pounds, falling 5-2 to Dumont's Ian Tolotti. The Colonials finished sixth as a team.

 

Grapple at the Garden

Led by second-place finishers Jason Hernandez (113), Andy Hernandez (132) and Austin Cannon (152), Long Branch finished second at the Grapple at the Garden tournament at Clarkstown South High School.

Finishing third were Justin Farnsworth (106), Mike Jones (120), Danny Mullan (145), Lamont Reid (170), John Mimes (195) and Joey Jasio (Hwt.).

 

John and Betty Vogeding Tournament

Freshman Kyle Slendorn, junior Anthony Gagliano, senior Jake Esposito won individual titles and the Rebels placed a wrestler in the top three in every other weight class to run away with the team title at Paulsboro High School.

Slendorn pinned Gloucester's Anthony Gallagher in 3:16 to win the 106-pound title. Gagliano beat Paulsboro junior Mike Morina 7-3 to win the 132-pound championship. Esposito defeated his own teammate, senior Hunter Leyden, 4-3 at 152 pounds. Placing second for the Rebels were junior Peter Dee at 120, junior Kris Lindemann at 138, senior Anthony Pozsonyi at 160, senior Austin Silverstein at 182, senior Sean Silverstein at 195, and senior Ryan Demian at heavyweight . Taking third were senior Mikey Sisolak at 113, junior Nick Ciaccia at 126, senior David Nocks at 152, junior Frank Leonardis at 160, senior Nick Lurski at 170 and sophomore Eric Keosseian at 220.

Lindemann, who placed sixth in New Jersey at 132 pounds last year, fell to Paulsboro's Sam Morina, 4-3. Morina was the Region VIII 126-pound champion last season.

Keansburg senior Tyree Sutton pinned his way to the 220-pound title, decking all three of his opponents in under one minute. Junior Dan Bauman took third at heavyweight.

Mount Olive Tournament

Freshman Stanley Wojdylak at 126 pounds and senior Paul Capaldo at 145 won individual titles to lead Middletown North to a fourth-place finish as a team. Wojdylak was the No. 6 seed and defeated fifth-seeded Tom Benway of Pequannock by 12-0 major decision in the final. Capaldo was the No. 2 seed and pinned top-seeded Anthony Aiello of Old Tappan in the final. Finishing third were sophomore Sean Deering at 106, junior Scott Svenson at 152, senior Fred Svenson at 170 and junior Anthony Vetrano at 182. Junior 195-pounder Chad Freshnock, the Region VI runner-up at 182 pounds last season, did not enter.

 

Neptune Classic

Toms River East senior Yoseph Borai won the 120-pound title and Jackson Liberty senior Matt Russo won the 138-pound title as the Shore Conference's only champions in the 15-team tournament.

Borai defeated North Hunterdon's Luke Approvato, 5-4, in the 120-pound final. Russo pinned St. John Vianney junior Khalil Haskins with a spladle in the second period in the 138-pound title.

In the 126-pound final, Jackson Liberty senior Mike Russo fell 3-1 in sudden victory to North Hunterdon's Ryan Pomrinca in a matchup of returning third-place finishers from the state tournament. Also finishing second were St. John Vianney's Luke Eckloff at 106, Toms River East's Tyler Machnik at 132, Manalapan's Joe Santomarco at 145, Toms River East's Andrew Meyers at 152, St. John Vianney's Kevin Grady at 160, Manalapan's Steven Chandler at 170, Jackson Liberty's Jerald Goodman at 182, Toms River East's Jake Dallago at 195 and St. John Vianney's Micah Clark at heavyweight.

Highland won the team title while Jackson Liberty finished fourth and St. John Vianney took fifth.

 

Nottingham Invitational

Junior Chris Rodriguez (132), senior Javier Holguin (195) and senior Garrett Hulse (220) each finished second to help the Hawks place fifth in the 14-team tournament.

 

Pine Barrens Classic

Shore junior Alex Johnson pinned his way to the 145-pound title, picking up career win No. 50 in the process, as the Blue Devils' only medal winner.

 

TCNJ Pride Tournament

Brick Memorial won the team title with three champions, one runner-up and two third-place finishers to outpace Toms River South and Cranford.

Seniors Alec Donovan (152) and Cliff Ruggiero (170), along with sophomore Nick Rivera (hwt) captured individual championships for the Mustangs. Senior Rob Ruggiero was second at 160 and junior Luke Vescovi (138), junior Anthony Mitchell (152) and senior Bob Mitler (220) finished third.

Toms River South junior Owen McClave won a loaded 120-pound bracket by defeating Demarest's Anthony Rubinetti, 4-3. Rubinetti had defeated Steinert's Brandon Cray 5-4 in the semifinals. Highly-touted freshman Cole Corrigan reached the final as an unseeded wrestler in the 126-pound bracket and defeated Point Boro's Dan Nobbs, 6-2, to start his career with a major statement. Nobbs is a two-time District 23 champion and two-time state qualifier.

Colts Neck freshman Joey King also had an outstanding debut in winning the 106-pound title as an unseeded entrant. King knocked off top-seeded Anthony Capece of Cranford, 4-2, in the semifinals before taking out second-seeded Logan Fox of Robbinsville, 3-1, in the championship bout.
