Matt DeRiggi is a 15-year old freshman at Toms River North and an excellent student, but more importantly, an inspiration to the freshmen class as well as the entire school.

DeRiggi suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and although he has never had the chance to play football before, recent action by two local football teams, Toms River North and Toms River East, helped him get that chance.

TRN Freshman football Coach Chris Gold recently approached Paul Barnoski, the athletic coordinator for the Mariners and asked if the team could honor Matt and have him run a play against Toms River East in the last freshmen game on Wed., Nov. 13th under the lights at TRN.

The TRE freshman coach, along with the entire TRE team complied, and were instrumental in making this an unforgettable moment, according to Gold.

Matt was named the "Captain" for that game and after the coin toss, the ball was placed on the 10-yard line and the players went through with the action as he scooted in for a 10-yard TD.
