The 2023-24 season opened with optimism and high expectations for the Freehold Boro boys basketball team and those feelings quickly turned to frustration after losing to rival Freehold Township at home on opening night.

Since then, however, the Colonials have gotten healthy and have also gotten hot.

After the opening night loss, Freehold Boro rattled off a 9-2 record through Thursday's home win over Lakewood. Last week was part of the Colonials' most impressive stretch of the season to date and was worth of the Week 4 Jersey Mike's Team of the Week award.

Standout junior Brian Tassey played through an illness that saddled him with a 104-degree fever in the opening-night loss against the Patriots and has since resumed his role as a do-it-all wing on a team that now boasts a talented, versatile player at all five spots on the floor.

With its complete lineup up and running, Freehold Boro has scored two wins over teams that were ranked at the time and those two wins came within five days of one another. The Colonials beat Southern, 64-52 on Jan. 6 and last week, they highlighted their Week 4 performance by beating Ranney, 70-69.

In the win over Ranney, senior Christian DiGiso hit the game-winning free throw with 3.6 seconds left. DiGiso finished with 10 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Tassey and fellow junior Qua'Mir Everett each added 18 points. Everett also grabbed 10 rebounds and added five assists.

Junior Aidan Hamlin-Woolfolk also contributed to the big win during the big week with 16 points, five rebounds and three blocks.

Freehold Township follows up a big week last week with another one coming up. After taking on defending NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV champion Trenton on Saturday, the Colonials will play key Class A Coastal divisional games vs. Holmdel and St. John Vianney.
