Colts Neck 2, Marlboro 1

Senior right-hander Rob Warendorf and junior left-hander Chris Murphy combined on a four-hitter and the Cougars (1-0, 1-0) scratched two runs across in the fourth to edge the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1) in their season opener. Warendorf allowed a run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, walking none and striking out four. Murphy came on in the fifth and worked the final 2 1/3, allowing one hit while punching out four to earn the save.

Juniors Jordan Gonzalez and Tyler Kay each drove in a run in the Colts Neck fourth. Gonzalez plated senior Paul Marinello with a groundout to shortstop and Kay singled to score junior Tyler Kapuscinski - who singled following a Marinello walk.

Junior left-hander Andrew Nardi allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five in the loss.

Howell 4, Freehold Twp. 3

The Rebels (2-0) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh and came back from an early 3-0 deficit to beat the Patriots (1-1). Junior catcher Rob Napolitano hit a one-out solo home run to left to cut the deficit to 3-2 and Howell took advantage of a throwing error with the bases loaded, which plated the tying and go-ahead runs.

Senior left-hander Zach Loroesh threw a complete game to earn the win, allowing three unearned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out three. He worked out of a first-and-third, no-out jam in the top of the sixth without allowing a run to get the Rebels back in the dugout with a chance to rally.

Sophomore shortstop Troy Miller went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and junior left fielder Andrew Larsen also went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior center fielder Mike Levy finished 2-for-4 for the Rebels.

Senior first basemen Nick Cardace and junior catcher Joe Silvestrone each went 2-for-3 for Freehold Township, with Cardace hitting two deep doubles to right-center field.

 

Class A Central

Holmdel at Monmouth - PPD, Wednesday

No. 3 Red Bank Catholic 3, Rumson-Fair Haven 0

Senior Jack Kissinger tossed a three-hit shutout with two walks and nine strikeouts and the Caseys (2-0, 2-0) took advantage of five Bulldogs' (0-2, 0-2) errors to pick up their second win of the season. Senior catcher Mike Alescio went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Red Bank Catholic offense.

Senior right-hander Shane McCarthy, Alescio's future teammate at Seton Hall, allowed three unearned run over six innings with six hits, one walk and nine strikeouts in taking the loss.

No. 5 St. John Vianney 6, Shore 4

Senior first baseman Joe Rotelli hit a two-run home run and senior third baseman Anthony LaVigne highlighted a four-run fourth with a two-run double as the Lancers (2-0, 2-0) made the most of four hits and beat the Blue Devils (0-1, 0-1).

Shore senior Andrew Schulz went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in the loss, while losing pitcher Matt Cosentino also added a double.

Manasquan 2, Raritan 1 (8 Innings)

Junior Ty Hawkins drove in the tying run with a single in the sixth and won the game in the eighth with a game-ending, RBI ground-rule double that gave the Warriors (1-0, 1-0) a win over the Rockets (0-1, 0-1). Manasquan was 1-8 in one-run games last year and matched their total of one-run wins with the victory Wednesday.

Manasquan pitchers combined to strike out 17 Raritan hitters, led by junior starter Marc Galvan and freshman left-hander Tom Sheehan. Galvan struck out 10 in 4 innings of work and Sheehan fanned five of the seven batters he faced, retiring all seven to earn the win in his high school debut.

Junior Max Hawkins went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases for Manasquan and Raritan senior  and losing pitcher Bruce Strickland went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

 

Class B North

No. 1 Wall 12, Freehold 0 (6 Innings)

Junior Nick Martinez and seniors Branden Beigert and Chris Barcas each drove in and scored two runs apiece and the Crimson Knights backed up winning pitcher Tyler Swiggart with plenty of offense in a six-inning win.

Beigert went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base and Barcas finished 3-for-5. Senior Matt Tancredi also went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Wall.

Swiggart allowed two hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts while earning the six-inning shutout.

Ocean 12, Long Branch 1

Senior Dan Verderese struck out 10 and allowed five hits in five innings to pick up the complete-game win and the Spartans (1-0, 1-0) coasted past the Green Wave to open their season. Junior outfielder Sam Maxwell picked up two hits and two RBI, while senior outfielder Glenn Davis also drove in a pair for Ocean.

Senior Connor Mullan had two hits for Long Branch and senior Shaun Lowney drove in the lone Green Wave run with an RBI double.

Red Bank 7, Neptune 2

Junior A.J. Forgione allowed two hits and struck out nine over five innings and the Bucs (1-0, 1-0) won their opener against the Scarlet Fliers. Senior Corey Martin roped two doubles and junior Isaiah Sesito added two hits for Red Bank. Junior Hunter Daly had two hits for Neptune.

 

Class B South

Manchester 1, Barnegat 0 (8 Innings)

Sophomore Ryan Vanderham doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Hawks (1-1, 1-0) to make a winner out of senior right-hander Devin Tomei, who earned the eight-inning shutout by allowing only two hits and five walks while striking out seven.
